After a summer overhaul of their squad, and a new Head Coach, Sheffield Wednesday are starting to look like genuine promotion contenders. They are in sensational form but with some players playing brilliantly, others are left on the sidelines.

New Head Coach Carlos Carvalhal added 12 players on permanent deals and their total number of loan signings was taken to six with the short-term addition of Norwich City striker Gary Hooper this week.

With almost 20 new additions, The Owls have a pretty big squad and it means that some players may be deemed surplus to requirements if they're not playing enough football.

The 49-year old Portuguese manager will shortly be planning for the January transfer window, if he hasn't already, and he will know which players he will be open to selling should an offer come in for them.

Here are FIVE players that Sheffield Wednesday should axe in the January transfer window.....

Liam Palmer

24-year midfielder Palmer started his career at Hillsborough and, apart from a season on loan at Tranmere Rovers, has spent his whole career with The Owls.

He had been fairly regular in Yorkshire, playing in 74 league games in the last two seasons. However, under Carlos Carvalhal he has been unable to establish himself in the starting XI.

He has played just four times in the league this season for Wednesday and, with the side in terrific form, he doesn't look like getting an opportunity any time soon. Come January, he may have to consider a move away if he wants regular first-team football.

Claude Dielna

The French defender joined The Owls last summer from Greek side Olympiacos and impressed in his first season due to his athleticism.

However, he has fallen down the pecking order under Carvalhal with the Portuguese preferring Tom Lees and Michael Turner or Glenn Loovens.

With no appearances in the league or the Capital One Cup, Wednesday should just sell the 27-year old and cut some of their wage bill and try and recoup some of what they paid for the defender.

Jose Semedo

Jose Semedo had been a regular starter since his arrival at Hillsborough in 2011 and has played over 120 times for the Owls in his four years at the club.

However his appearances have been restricted this season under the new head coach and he has played just 4 times in the league, with two of those appearances coming off the bench.

The 30-year old has been a fantastic servant for the club, helping them achieve promotion to the Championship and then going on to secure their status but it may now be time to move on for Semedo as he enters the latter stages of his career.

Filipe Melo

Filipe Melo joined The Owls in January for an undisclosed fee from Portuguese side Moreirense but played just six times in the second half of the campaign.

He may have thought that a Portuguese coach would pick him more often, however, he has played even less and is actually yet to make a single appearance for Wednesday this season.

Despite being a popular fugure for his previous club, it just hasn't worked out for Melo in Yorkshire and come January, they may just want to cut their losses and sell the 25-year old.

Lewis McGugan

After a successful loan spell at Hillsborough last season, Wednesday tried incredibly hard to re-sign Lewis McGugan in the summer after they finally agreed a fee with newly-promoted Watford.

Despite scoring twice already this season, McGugan has found game time hard to come by under Carvalhal and has played just five games in the league so far, with a further two appearances in the Capital One Cup.

Although the 27-year old is popular with fans because of his impressive displays during his loan spell last season, Wednesday should seriously consider cashing in on the midfielder as he just doesn't seem able to establish himself in the starting XI on a regular basis.
