The Sky Bet Championship is a very difficult league with the margins of success or failure extremely close, signing the right players is absolutely vital.

Bristol City are in trouble at the bottom of the Championship table currently in 22nd, and facing the very real possibility of being relegated to League One.

City have managed just four wins in the league and have scored 24 goals, whilst conceding 64 goals it doesn't look good, but on the plus side there is still time to turn things around.

Whoever is the next manager of the club is going to have to use the transfer window to recruit some fresh players, to try and keep them in the Championship, before time runs out for the west country club.

There is plenty of talent around the Football League, we have drawn up a list of FIVE players that we think Bristol City should try and sign during this transfer window.

Josh Vela

The Bolton right-back would be a great asset to Bristol City in their fight for survival, yes Bolton are bottom of the league, but Vela is a quality young defender and with Bolton in trouble financially, they could get him at a bargain price.

Vela was subject to a bid from Championship club Cardiff but it was rejected as it was too low, so if Bristol City met the asking price, they could snatch him from under Cardiff's nose.

22-year-old Vela has played 15 games for Bolton, and scored one goal, he has pace and can get up and down the right flank, an asset Bristol could definitely use.

Ruben Reid

Bobby Reid

Plymouth Argyle's star striker is one of the best forwards in League Two, it's his goals that got the Pilgrims into the Play-offs last season and fired them to the top of the division.

The 27-year-old forward is more than capable of playing at a higher level than League Two, he scored 6 goals in 14 games this season and had hit form until he picked up an injury, which he has now fully recovered from.

Ruben has pace and is a strong physical presence up front, and brings others into play but his main feature is he is deadly in front of goal, as many teams in League Two have found out.

Conor Hourihane

Conor Hourihane

Irish Midfielder Conor Hourihane has been Barnsley's prized asset for the last season and a half - he is an excellent dead ball specialist and gets from box-to-box with ease.

He has netted seven times this season for struggling Barnsley who currently sit 17th in League One, just two points outside the drop zone.

Hourihane could add that extra bit of dynamism and goal threat from midfield that Bristol City seem to be missing this season.

Tom Nichols

Tom Nichols

The 22-year old Exeter City striker deserves more recognition than he has got so far, If Exeter were flying at the top of League Two, you would be hearing more about this exciting, young striker

Nine goals for the season so far, the 22-year-old has an excellent dead ball - most of City's good attacking play comes through him.

With out a doubt Nichols can play at a higher level than he currently does, and Bristol City should undoubtedly consider a move for the 5ft 10 striker in this January window.

Alan Hutton

Aston Villa right-back does not cut a happy figure at Villa and would surely like like to move away from the Birmingham club.

He has been in and out of the Villa side, and could be open to a move from a club that is doomed to be relegated from the Premier League, to a club that still has hope of staying up.

His huge experience would be a huge asset to Bristol City, in their fight to remain in the Championship.
