Reading have had a dire season and it's glaringly obvious that the club will be rebuilding the squad this summer.

Reading as a club targeted a finish in and around the play-offs last year and in October it looked like they may do that and more.

Meanwhile, after a poor season beforehand, the fans were hoping of a more mild mannered top half finish, but the players failed to deliver even that.

So it's obvious there will be chopping and changing this summer, but what will be interesting to see is how ambitious the owners are, and whether they're willing to pour heavy funds into transfers this summer in order to achieve the promotion they claim to want.

The transfer record at Reading stands at £2.5 million for notorious midfield flop Emerson Fae, and though it seems highly unlikely they'll break that record this summer, here are a few names that could revolutionise this team......

Nahki Wells

wellsssss

I think for the last two seasons in a row Nahki Wells has been voted as the player Reading fans would most like to sign, and there's now wonder why.

He's outdone himself this season with 17 league goals and won Huddersfield player of the year for 2016. His pace is something sought after greatly by plenty of managers in strikers.

Reading are ridiculously depleted up front and need goals ahead of next year, and if they want quality up top they'll have to break the bank.

Jonathan Kodjia

The January window before last, Reading were way down in the depths of the Championship and rapidly searching for a striker to turn their fortunes around. Despite ultimately signing Yakubu, they were initially linked with Kodjia, who was enjoying an excellent season in Ligue 2.

He missed out on his former side Angers success in Ligue 1 this year by signing for Bristol City the following summer, and to say he's been influential is an understatement.

Finishing with a tally of 19 league goals, Kodjia will undoubtedly be hot property this summer, and Reading should feel daring enough to put in a bid, and entice him with a bit of money.

Shane Duffy

Duffy has had a fine season at Blackburn and despite his team's struggles he was one of the better centre halves in the Championship, and has attracted the eyes of many.

Reading should definitely make a move for him this summer, and I'm not even sure they'd have to break their transfer record to do it.

The club's defence has been erratic this season and it needs to be solidified with signings and additions this summer.

Duffy could form a strong partnership with Paul McShane ahead of next year.

Matt Doherty

Wolves won player of the season and fans player of the season at the club this season and, though he spent most of the year at left back, he's a right footed player and has shown to be a dependable defender.

Reading are in need of another right back as they only have one at the moment in Chris Gunter, who's been average at best over the past two seasons and is extremely replaceable.

Reading should cough up the money to bring him in as a solid defence is key to success as a football club.

Dwight Gayle

g dwight gayle

Dwight Gayle's future at Crystal Palace is as clear as mud and he must be as confused about his role at the club, as the rest of us are.

It seems as though Crystal Palace will be bringing in a striker or two this summer, pushing him further down the pecking order.

He's been linked with the Championship for a long while, and I believe Reading should make a move this summer, so that he can come into the second tier and get his goalscoring mojo back, though he'll cost a fair penny.

Reading fans... What do you make of this? Do you want these players? Will you break the bank this summer? How much do you think you'll spend? Let us know in the comments below!
