Newcastle United are struggling in the Premier League again this season, despite making many big money signings in the summer.

Magpies manager Steve McClaren has a fairly big squad with a number of players not playing, and on the fringes of the squad.

The ex-Derby County boss may look to offload a number of players to the Championship in January, to free up funds for new signings to improve his squad in a bid to avoid relegation.

Newcastle United currently sit in 19th position in the Premier League, and will be hoping to rejuvenate their form over the Christmas period, and through the new year.

Here are FIVE players Newcastle should offload to the Championship in January......

Yoan Gouffran

Gouffran joined the Magpies in 2013 from Bordeaux, and has made 82 appearances for the club scoring 11 goals.

The French winger has been on the fringes of the Newcastle squad since Steve Mclaren arrived, and the later stages of Alan Pardew's tenure at the club.

He has been linked with several moves to the Championship, which is something Newcastle should look at in January to free up some wages.

Emmanuel Riviere

Riviere is perhaps the forgotten man at Newcastle, and he has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League with just one goal in 23 appearances since joining from Monaco.

The striker may want to leave the club in January and the Magpies could look to send him to the Championship to get game-time.

Plenty of Championship clubs will be looking for a striker in January, and the Frenchman could be a perfect acquisition.

Mike Williamson

Williamson has been on loan at Wolves for the past month, and has kept three clean sheets in four games, but was recalled to Newcastle because of injury problems to their defenders.

Williamson may return to the Championship with Wolves in January, if Newcastle add another defender to their squad which appears likely.

The 32-year-old is definitely a player who will be on the fringes at the Tyneside club this season, so it makes sense for all parties involved to see him depart.

Sylvain Marveaux

Sylvain Marveaux

Marveaux joined Newcastle from Rennes in 2011, but has been on the fringes of the squad the past couple of seasons.

With Newcastle possibly looking to move on some players in January to free up funds, Marveaux is likely to be near the top of the list.

A Championship move would be good for the forgotten midfielder, who needs to desperately be playing football.

Rolando Aarons

aarons

Aarons has made seven appearances for the Newcastle senior side after progressing through the academy, and he has been on the fringes of the team this season, and may be available for loan in January.

Newcastle should consider offloading Aarons to a Championship side in January to aid his development.

Aarons should emulate Sammy Ameobi, who departed St James' Park on loan, to join Cardiff City in the Championship.
