Mansfield Town endured an indifferent season during 2014/15 and finished in a lowly 21st position in the League Two table.

Mansfield have added to their team

It was a season of transition in a sense with Stags stalwart Adam Murray taking over managerial duties from Paul Cox who departed in November.

Murray enjoyed a decent start to life in management but things soon hit a brick wall and relegation looked a real possibility with the season drawing to a close.

With the Stags looking to push on next season, Lee Clarke takes a look at five players who could really make Mansfield Town a force to be reckoned with once again during the 2015/16 campaign.

Matt Green

Former Stags striker Green would be a hugely popular signing with the fans given his legendary status with those of a Mansfield Town persuasion.

The former Oxford United talisman netted 54 goals in 87 appearances for the Stags including 27 during the club’s promotion winning season.

The fact he was the man who fired the club back into the Football League will mean he is always welcome through the doors at the One Call Stadium.

The transfer might not be quite as unrealistic as some fans may think either. Green has missed the best part of 12 months after rupturing his knee ligaments whilst playing for Birmingham City.

The Blues have now released the 28-year-old and he will be keen to get his career back on track.

Tom Naylor

Another former player who would be a popular arrival at the One Call Stadium is ex-Derby County defender, Tom Naylor.

Naylor was a product of the Mansfield Town youth academy and graduated to play 23 times for the first-team.

A string of impressive displays at the centre of defence led to him receiving interest from Fulham, who at the time were a Premier League outfit.

The then boss Paul Cox was happy to allow the youngster to go on a one-week trial at Craven Cottage, although the Stags eventually let him leave permanently to join the Rams, with Naylor preferring a more realistic opportunity to play regular football.

The 23-year-old’s career seems to have stalled somewhat of late and he has spent the last three seasons on various loan spells with the likes of Bradford City, Newport County and Cambridge United.

He, like Matt Green will be eager to play some football and where better to do so than at his hometown club.

Callum Chettle

Ilkeston FC midfielder Chettle is the son of former Nottingham Forest legend Steve and is thought to have admirers in abundance throughout the Football League.

The highly-rated youngster has been in eye-catching form for the Robins during the last 18-months and it would seem that the youngster is now ready to make the step-up.

Adam Murray seems eager to give youth a chance at Mansfield and Chettle could do a lot worse than join the Stags should they be interested.

With the emergence of Jack Thomas into the first-team, it shows that Murray is not afraid to throw youngsters into the first-team spotlight if they are good enough.

Chettle is a midfielder with an eye for goal and the 18-year-old would be given ample first-team opportunities in order to stamp his authority on the Football League, should he choose the Stags as the club at which to further his career.

Elliot Parish

This one might seem slightly ambitious considering he played 13-times for Blackpool in the Championship last season, but the custodian could still be one to peruse for Adam Murray.

Parish is a product of the Aston Villa youth academy and despite Blackpool’s troubles last season, he was a consistent figure between the posts when called upon.

After a turbulent season with the Tangerines, Parish will be looking to settle down at a club where he can play regular first-team football. Enter Mansfield Town.

The 24-year-old would be deemed a coup for any League Two side, and should the finances be available he would be a shrewd piece of business for the Stags boss.

Adam Barton

The 24-year-old central midfielder was released by Coventry City this week and would add some steel into the Mansfield Town midfield.

The ex-Preston North End man boasts over 150 appearances spread across both the Championship and League One and will probably not be short of contract offers.

Barton does have some injury concerns and the Stags would need to do their homework a little bit before pursuing his signature.

He played an instrumental part in Coventry City’s League One survival bid and his release has surprised many of the Sky Blues’ faithful.

The completion of any deal for the Stags would rely heavily on the player’s desire to drop into League Two for the first time in his career, but Barton should certainly be one to keep an eye on.
