After it was confirmed that Aston Villa's takeover by Chinese business man Tony Xia was completed, Villa fans can breathe a sigh of relief that their time with Randy Lerner at the helm is over, and also be safe in the knowledge that new manager Roberto Di Matteo will have funds to spend.

Last season was a miserable one for the Villains, but with the takeover now complete, all focus can now be on building for next season and getting out of the Championship at the first attempt.

To do this, Di Matteo will need to make sure he gets rid of any unwanted baggage in the squad, while making sure he adds the right personnel to his squad with the funds he has available.

There will be numerous positions in the squad which need strengthening, and it will be key that the most important areas are filled with quality.

With this in mind, FLW writer Lee Connor identifies FIVE players Roberto Di Matteo needs to spend his £30m budget on....

Oliver Norwood

Villa need someone in the middle of the park who knows the Championship well and has enough ability to perform under the pressure of playing for a club like Villa. Oliver Norwood fits that mould perfectly.

He has been excellent for Reading on a consistent basis, and is easily one of the standout midfield players in the Championship.

His stock will rise further if he continues to impress in the European Championships for Northern Ireland, and he is exactly the sort of player who a relegated team trying to get out of the Championship needs to sign.

Matt Phillips

What better way to get your team attacking quickly and directly than signing one of the league's best wingers.

Phillips is an excellent Championship player, and is well capable of playing at an even higher level than he does currently. He is capable of winning games on his own through bits of individual brilliance, while he is also capable of laying chances on a plate for his team mates.

He will not come cheap, but with a £30m budget at his disposal, Di Matteo would be wise to invest in a player of Phillips' quality as he looks to guide Villa back to the big time at the first time of asking.

Matt Mills

Di Matteo will need someone at the back who is a solid presence and leader, as well as someone who knows the Championship, and Matt Mills fits that bill perfectly.

The former Reading man has been a rock at Nottingham Forest and on his day can look a cut above many of the defenders across the entire division.

He would be an ideal fit for the club, and with Nottingham not being too far from Villa Park, Mills may well be tempted to make the move if the offer and ambition of the club can match his own. At 29, he should be entering his prime as a defender, making it the perfect time for Di Matteo to pick him up.

Leon Osman

Now this really would be a steal, but with Osman being released from his contract at Everton, Villa would be very wise to use some of their budget to pay the wages Osman might require to make a move to the Championship.

He would add experience and guile to the Villa squad, and is a real team man, something the club have not had enough of over the last two seasons.

If Di Matteo wants someone from the Premier League to drive his team forward, he might well not have to look much further than Osman, who at 35 may well have 1 or 2 season left in the tank at this level.

Patrick Bamford

Goals win games, and Bamford is someone who scores those goals for you.

He struggled at Norwich last season on loan in the Premier League, but was given little chance to shine really. However, he has proved on a few occasions now that he can do it in the Championship, and a move to Villa might be just the kickstart in his career that he needs.

With Antonio Conte coming in at Chelsea, it is unlikely Bamford is going to get much of a chance at Stamford Bridge. He really needs to make a move for his own good sooner rather than later, and this could present an ideal opportunity for both him, and Aston Villa.

Villa fans, would you take these players? Who else do you think the club should look to buy? Let us know in the comments!!!
