Cardiff City are starting to gather pace in the Championship play-off race, and are now just one point behind Sheffield Wednesday who currently occupy the final top six position.

A recent spell of consistency where Russell Slade's side have managed four victories in their last six games and have only lost four out of their last 15, has propelled the former Premier League side up the table.

As a result of the recent upturn in fortune, fans are starting to get behind manager Russell Slade following months of disbelief and frustration.

It’s never been easy for The Bluebirds to achieve promotion, after years of trying and failing under Dave Jones, before securing promotion as champions under Malky Mackay, which inevitably ended in relegation following the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Before Russell Slade was appointed Cardiff had a squad that was bursting at the seams, after Solskjaer had desires to build depth giving him the ‘tinker man’ tag.

Despite Slade has done a fantastic job cutting the squad down there are still some players who the fans can’t wait to see the back of, including a mass of strikers coming in with high potential, who never live up to expectations.

Football League World writer Kieran Creeg takes a look at FIVE players Cardiff fans surely can’t wait to see the back of ……..

Sammy Ameobi

Highly-rated wide man Sammy Ameobi turned down Wolves in the summer to sign for Cardiff City on loan.

Fans had high expectations for the 23-year-old Newcastle United player, who stated he wanted to grow up and become a 20 goal a season striker whilst on loan at Cardiff, however Ameobi has only found the net once all season in a 2-0 victory over Wolves.

Cardiff City boss Russell Slade revealed in December that the frontman, has seen his time at the club disrupted as he struggles with asthma, and because of this Cardiff should consider ending Ameobi's loan spell and using the money elsewhere.

Federico Macheda

Macheda joined Cardiff from Man United in 2014 after impressing on loan, however since joining permanently the Italian has struggled with injury and hasn’t been able to build momentum.

Macheda became a cult hero at Manchester United, after scoring the winning goal against Aston Villa back in 2009, where he was tipped to be the next big thing.

Nottingham Forest now have their hands on the 24-year-old after signing him on loan, hopefully Macheda can find his best form at the City Ground after all his career in South Wales doesn’t look promising.

Kadeem Harris

Malky Mackay signed a fresh faced winger called Kadeem Harris from Wycombe Wanderers back in 2012, and has spent time out on loan with Brentford, before joining Barnsley on loan where he made 13 appearances after failing to make an impact for the Bluebirds.

Harris is now 22-years-old and will be looking to join a club where he is in the first team picture on a regular basis to try and make a name for himself.

Harris has made just one appearance for Russell Slade's side this season and is likely to leave in the summer.

Eoin Doyle

Eoin Doyle was one of Russell Slade’s first signings as Bluebirds boss over a year ago, and despite scoring 25 goals that season for Chesterfield, Fans questioned the move after making it clear they wanted a Premier League goal scorer.

Irish forward Doyle scored five goals for the Bluebirds leading up to the end of the season, however Slade decided to stick with Mason, Macheda and Jones as his preferred strikers pushing the player out on loan.

Doyle has spent the duration of the current campaign on loan with surprise package Preston North End who also have a chance of securing promotion via the play-offs, following a spell of good form and will be looking to force through a permanent move if it is clear he has no future in South Wales.

Joe Lewis

After making just 1 league appearance for The Bluebirds in four years, during a Premier League draw with Hull City, Lewis is unlikely to stay put as he goes in the search of first team football.

Lewis joined Malky Mackay’s Cardiff City back in July 2012 on a free transfer, but the fine form of Scottish goalkeeper David Marshall and the introduction of Simon Moore has pushed the 28-year-old down the pecking order.

The 28-year-old has spent the current campaign out on loan with Fulham, and spent last season out on loan with Blackpool who suffered relegation to League One.
