Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United have been handed a glamour tie in the FA Cup, with the Whites set to travel to North London to take on Arsenal in the first weekend of January.

Leeds have, of course, set their sights on promotion back to the Premier League this season, and they will certainly get at least one taste of the top-flight in 2020, with Arsenal awaiting them in the third-round of the FA Cup.

Pre-2004, Leeds would regularly meet Arsenal in the Premier League, with the two battling for European qualification regularly in the early 2000s.

They’ve crossed paths three times since in the FA Cup, with those fixtures producing some memorable moments.

With that in mind, we look back on some memorable clashes between the two sides here…

The League Cup final in the 1967/68 season was a memorable one for Leeds United and a significant step in the club’s history.

Leeds have only won the League Cup once, and it came in 1968, as Terry Cooper’s goal set them up for a 1-0 victory over the Gunners.

This win set Leeds up for a golden period under Don Revie.

That win in 1968 remains Leeds’ only League Cup success, and four years later they were beating the Gunners to lift their only FA Cup title to date.

Allan Clarke’s diving header secured a 1-0 win for Revie’s side against Arsenal, with Leeds’ dominance in the English game thriving at this point.

Manchester United won the treble in 1998/99, but Leeds helped them along the way by beating Arsenal.

In the penultimate game of the season, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s goal was enough for a 1-0 win at Elland Road, leaving Man United needing to work their way past Blackburn and Tottenham to reclaim the Premier League.

They did just that, with Leeds hindering Arsenal’s quest for silverware once more.

Leeds were in free-fall in the Premier League, with their Champions League semi-final in 2001 becoming a distant memory.

In 2002/03, relegation was a real possibility, whilst Arsenal were battling Manchester United for the Premier League title.

As the season ticked towards the final couple of games, Leeds travelled to Highbury and beat Arsenal 3-2 thanks to goals from Harry Kewell, Ian Harte and Mark Viduka.

They handed the title to Man United, but retained their Premier League status for another 12 months.

After four Leeds wins, we had to mention a defeat, with this one in January 2012 pretty memorable.

Thierry Henry had left Arsenal for Barcelona before heading to the MLS with New York Red Bulls. However, he was back in 2012, making a second debut in the FA Cup third-round clash with Leeds.

The Whites held the Gunners for long periods, but Henry stepped up to the plate in the 78th minute, rolling back the years and scoring the winning goal.

Replays of this will be shown right up until Leeds head to the Emirates next month.
