Cardiff City under the controversial ownership of Vincent Tan enjoyed some success a couple of years back when they were promoted to the Premier League as champions.

But the following season was steeped in controversy as Malky Mackay was sacked and the controversial transfer policy of Tan was criticised heavily.

Tan also changed the club's kit from the traditional blue to a more marketable red, angering the fans as Tan was destroying the heart of the club.

They were immediately relegated and in their first season back in the Championship, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was promptly sacked after a poor start to the season and under the renewed guidance of Russell Slade, they are challenging for the play-offs this season after finishing mid-table last season.

The furore over Tan's ownership has died down a bit this season with him allowing the kit to return to the traditional blue strip instead of the controversial red one.

Whilst the home crowds are still very low they are steadily increasing and the away followings are certainly respectable.

The critics of Slade at the start of the season have been answered and fans are now fully behind the team as they go for the play-offs.

We look at the FIVE of the most pointless Cardiff City signings of all-time.........

Nicky Maynard

Whilst the prolific striker was signed for £3 million by Cardiff in their promotion winning season of 2012/13, he played little part in it.

In his defence he did tear his anterior cruciate ligament and was out for most of the season, but then went on to play little part in their following season as he was not up to Premier League standard.

Scoring just the two goals in three years at the club, he left for Wigan on loan before completing a permanent move to the MK Dons.

Whilst his time was blighted by injury, he still is undoubtedly a flop.

Robbie Fowler

There was a feeling that the Liverpool legend was signed for his name rather than his ability at the time.

Fowler signed a two year deal in 2007 and scored four goals in 13 games and was troubled by recurring injuries.

He visited injury specialists all over the world to try and sort this problem out, but never did and was often left out of the Cardiff team due to lack of fitness.

He was part of the Cardiff squad that were FA Cup runners up but did not receive a medal.

His Cardiff hell finally ended when he joined Blackburn in 2008 where he endured an even worse spell.

Eddie Johnson

He has appeared on a few of the lists, as the American was a highly touted talent when playing for the Kansas City Wizards, but ultimately proved a flop.

He had a host of suitors back in 2007 when he moved to Fulham for over £6 million pounds, but ultimately flopped there and was sent out to Championship side Cardiff where people thought he may cope with the lower standard, but two goals in 30 appearances was a poor return and the loan was promptly cancelled.

John Brayford

Signed for the 2013/14 season in which Cardiff were in the Premier League, they were told that Brayford was the best left back in the Football League, when they signed him for £1.5 million.

When Mackay was sacked though, Brayford was overlooked regularly by his replacements and wasn't even named on the bench for some of the league matches.

After the relegation to the Championship, Solskjaer said he wanted to give Brayford a chance, but after he failed to impress and was sold to Sheffield United for just over £1 million.

Jon Parkin

The beast may not of been an expensive flop but was a strange signing by Cardiff at the time, as they were going for promotion.

He was blighted by injury in his one year spell and his one goal in 11 games was a poor return.

He was loaned out to numerous sides such as Doncaster and Scunthorpe before being sold to Fleetwood in 2012.

He was never up to Championship standard and his injuries didn't help and Jay Bothroyd being favoured over him.
