Barnsley FC are currently on a storming run in League One and have propelled themselves into the play-off positions at the perfect time of the season.

Manager Lee Johnson departed midway through the season, but in Paul Heckingbottom they have found a man who has suitably allowed the team to carry on playing in the style embedded by Johnson, and it is working a treat.

They have moved well in the loan market, making numerous signings of young talented players from Premier League clubs, while in Sam Winnall they have one of the best strikers in the division.

Things haven't always gone so well for the Tykes though in the market, and there have been some bad and pointless signings made by numerous manages over the years, including foreign names who have drifted off into obscurity.

Here at FLW, we have taken a look at FIVE of the most pointless Barnsley signings.......

Keith Curle

The former England defender arrived at Oakwell after a stint with Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United in 2002, and even at the time a few eyebrows were raised.

Curle made only 11 appearances for the Tykes, and it was clear for all to see that his career was coming to an end as he struggled to run at pace and keep up with 90% of players he came up against.

It was a baffling signing given how he looked on the pitch, and he promptly had his contract terminated by mutual consent after only two months, moving on to Mansfield where he would become a player manager.

Mido

Mido

Possibly one of the oddest signings in English football, never mind just at Barnsley, Mido joined Oakwell in 2012 after being in the wilderness for quite some time.

Many fans at the time questioned the move and the motives behind it, and they had their theories proved right as Mido made only one appearance for the club, before agreeing to have his contract ended after only 4 months in South Yorkshire.

Mido achieved absolutely nothing with the club, and it will forever go down as one of the most pointless signings ever made, by any club, ever.

John Rooney

Signed in 2013 after leaving Orlando, the brother of England international Wayne Rooney was nothing but an abject failure during his time at Oakwell.

Rooney failed to make a single appearance during his season with the club, and was released after one year with nothing to show but a well known surname.

His suffered a similar fate after joining Bury, and finally found his level with Chester City, where he remains to this day.

A very strange signing indeed for Barnsley, you cannot help but feel he was signed based on his name alone in the hope it would pay off. Sadly for Rooney and Barnsley, it came nowhere near to paying off.

Miguel Mostto

Miguel Mostto

The Peruvian signed for Barnsley in what was a deal worth nearly half a million pound, which in 2007, represented quite an outlay for they Tykes.

However, Mostto was never nowhere near up to standard required for English football, and made just over 20 appearances during his ill fated time with the Reds.

Mostto is not someone that many fans at Oakwell will remember for any sort of right reasons, and despite 11 caps for his country, goes down as one of the most pointless signings in the clubs history.

Given the fee paid, and his contribution to the team in general, his time in England can be seen as a failure, and he made his way back to his homeland after only a year in South Yorkshire.

Gjorgji Hristov

The Macedonian striker signed for the Tykes following promotion to the Premier League, in what was a club record fee of £1.5m in 1997.

During a three year stay however, he only managed 8 goals in over 40 appearances, which in itself is still nothing to shout home about given the fact he stayed at the club for 3 years.

However, the biggest thing Barnsley fans often remember about Hristov was his opinion about the town, and especially the female population of the town. He famously criticised how the women in the town look, calling them certain names which cannot be repeated in this article.

After this, he never really recovered as there was always an air of hostility towards him during matches. Hristov had the talent, of that there was no doubt, but there are still questions to be asked about the motive behind his signing and what he actually contributed.
