The 2017/18 campaign was a major disappointment for Reading, who flirted with relegation in the Sky Bet Championship.

12 months ago, Reading were competing in the play-off final, with a penalty shootout denying them Premier League football.

However, the 2017/18 campaign was a stark contrast, with Reading struggling and relegation even threatening the Royals.

Paul Clement eventually guided Reading to safety, but there was very little to be positive about at the Madejski Stadium.

Reading’s supporters will hope for better in the Championship next season, with Clement now preparing himself for his first summer transfer window, which will give him the opportunity to reshape the squad he inherited from Jaap Stam.

Changes in personnel will be made in the coming weeks and months, as Reading look to put last season’s disappointment behind them.

Here at FLW, we take a look at FIVE midfielder’s Reading need to be casting an eye over this summer…

Maddison has been exceptional for Peterborough in League One, with the midfielder’s goals and assists record extremely impressive.

Clement needs to add some creativity to his squad this summer, with Maddison a standout candidate.

Nolan is another that has impressed in League One over the last 12 months.

The Shrewsbury midfielder has helped his side to the brink of promotion and is sure to attract plenty of interest if Paul Hurst’s side aren’t promoted.

If he becomes available, Reading could do far worse than adding him to their squad.

Bridcutt has found his opportunities limited at Nottingham Forest since Aitor Karanka’s arrival.

Whether the midfielder is available this summer remains to be seen, but he’d be a good addition at Reading.

The ex-Brighton and Leeds midfielder could bring some more experience to the spine of Reading’s side.

Aribo impressed at Charlton Athletic last season, with the midfielder’s performances helping the Addicks into the play-offs.

The 21-year-old has real quality and could certainly be one for the future.

Reading should be looking to take advantage of Charlton remaining in League One.

Ampadu has an exceptional reputation, having made the move from Exeter City to Chelsea.

The teenager can operate in both central midfield and defence, with Chelsea rating him highly.

Clement should be looking to make full use of his contacts at Stamford Bridge and bring Ampadu in on-loan.
