Derby County have begun their search for a new manager after Gary Rowett left for Stoke City in the week.

Whilst some fans weren't happy with the former Birmingham boss and the style of play, it was still a blow for the Rams after Rowett had taken them to a top six finish despite cutting the budget.

The new manager will be tasked with trying to replicate that but it will be a tough ask given the financial restraints.

However, they will look to wheel and deal and selling star man Matej Vydra could give the new man funds to go into the market.

With an old squad, younger, hungry players will be targeted and here we look at five midfielders who fit into that category and would add to the Derby squad...

The Shrewsbury man has established himself as one of the best players in League One and even if they win promotion on Sunday they will find it hard to keep Nolan.

He weighs in with goals, has great pace and aggression and would add a lot to a laboured Rams midfield.

Palmer joined Derby on loan in January but didn't force his way into the first-team despite showing flashes of his ability.

But, that talent will have been noted and a new manager could get a lot of the Chelsea man who already has a promotion from the league after his spell with Huddersfield.

The Southampton man spent the season with Norwich and will likely be on the move again given Saints survival.

The 23-year old would add bite and energy to the Rams midfield, qualities they currently lack.

The former Fulham man can't get a look-in at Bournemouth and may need a move to resurrect his career.

He has quality on the ball and was highly thought of a few years ago but hasn't kicked on since. Hyndman could be a key part of a Derby side looking to play with a passing style.

Derby were linked with a move for the Wigan captain back in the January window but nothing materialised.

It will be a lot harder now the Latics won promotion but Morsy would add a lot to the Derby midfield.

At 26, he is approaching his peak years and would add steel and aggression to the team.
