Newcastle's underwhelming campaign came to a catastrophic climax as they were consigned to relegation to the Championship.

Although they have managed to retain the services of manager Rafael Benitez, it seems likely that a number of their star players will jump ship - such as Georginio Wijnaldum, Ayoze Perez and Andros Townsend.

It is imperative, therefore, that the Magpies recruit well. They must avoid signing too many "superstars" on high wages as they might end up like Queen's Park Rangers. But they must also sign players who are likely to fire them up the table and help them to achieve instant promotion back to the Premiership.

Manchester United are famed for their academy. They continue to churn out talented footballers at a regular rate and this was evidenced most prominently during their injury crisis this season.

Louis Van Gaal gave a number of youngsters their debut and a spell at a top Championship side would be mutually beneficial.

So here are FIVE Manchester United youngsters that Newcastle should consider signing...

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

Borthwick-Jackson burst on to the scene this season amidst a defensive injury crisis and stepped up competently and assuredly.

The 19-year-old left back showed extreme maturity in his defensive performances as well as an admirable willingness to get down the left side to aid attacks.

With Luke Shaw nearing a return from injury though, a spell in the Championship playing regular football is probably his best option and Newcastle need somebody to fight for a starting spot with Paul Dummett.

Donald Love

Love

Daryl Janmaat may well be on his way out at St. James' Park after attracting plenty of interest from clubs in Europe. If this happens then Newcastle will need a right back and a loan move for Donald Love could be an option.

The Scotland under-21 international made his first team breakthrough under Van Gaal this year but injury limited his game time.

The 21-year-old has had a loan spell at Wigan last season and might look for one more loan spell to develop his game further.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah

Mensah

Fosu-Mensah is another youngster who was given his first team opportunity by Louis Van Gaal. He was handed his professional debut in a 3-2 victory over Arsenal and has made 8 league appearances for the Red Devils.

The Netherlands youth international can operate at full back, centre half but predominantly as a defensive midfielder.

This type of versatility makes the 18-year-old a perfect capture for any Championship side - especially a promotion-chasing team like Newcastle.

Andreas Pereira

Andreas Pereira

Brazilian starlet Andreas Pereira is regarded very highly at Manchester United.

The 20-year-old has been given a small number of first team opportunities, mainly from the bench. If he is to kick on, a loan spell with regular football will be his best bet.

Pereira has never had a loan spell so the Championship might come as a bit of a wake-up call to him and he is likely to get kicked quite a bit. But it should benefit his game in the long-term and Newcastle could benefit from his talent in the short-term.

James Wilson

Wilson enjoyed a successful loan spell at Brighton last season but is quite far down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

With Rashford scoring goals, Martial playing well, Rooney still remaining an option and Mourinho stating his desire to sign one more striker, the likelihood is that Wilson will be farmed out on loan for another year.

The Championship is his likely destination again and a strikeforce of Aleksandr Mitrovic, Adam Armstrong and James Wilson is not going to be short of goals next year.
