Leeds United are arguably the biggest club currently plying their trade in the Sky Bet Championship, but over the last decade, they have lost their way somewhat.

Dropping as low as League One was as bad as it got but now the Whites are seemingly stuck in a rut once again, with the club languishing close to the Championship relegation zone under the leadership of Steve Evans.

Whether the ex-Boston United manager is the right man to take the Whites to the next level remains to be seen - you certainly wouldn't back him to finish the season in the hot seat given the club's hierarchy and their trigger happy vision for the club.

Here Football League World's Lee Clarke takes a look at FIVE players who could come in and take Leeds United to the next level......

Daniel Bentley

Boss Steve Evans recently praised current stopper Marco Silvestri for his performances between the posts for the club, but it is also no secret that Evans is keen to recruit a new goalkeeper.

Bentley has been in great form for Southend United and it would really be remarkable, if he ends another transfer window still with the Shrimpers.

Phil Brown has stated previously that the player can go all the way to the top in English football, but a Championship club with a certain degree of ambition could be an attractive proposition for the keeper too.

Kyle Lafferty

One thing the Whites are lacking is a fox in the box to tuck away the loose balls in the penalty area, and Northern Irishman Lafferty would alter that.

A constant threat for any defence, Lafferty would be a real handful for Championship defenders and it would be a really shrewd move if Leeds can land the player during the January transfer window.

Summer signing Chris Wood has not yet hit top form and the signing of Lafferty is likely to remove some of the evident pressure from the New Zealand international's shoulders.

Andy King

Leeds have some really talented youngsters in the middle of the park, but what they do really lack is some guile and experience in key matches.

Leicester City midfielder King has found himself as more of a bit-part performer under the leadership of Claudio Ranieri, and a move could be on the horizon in the near future.

Despite being just 27-years-old King boasts over 250 appearances for Leicester City, with the majority of those coming in the second tier.

His experience could be just what the Whites need in the centre of midfield.

Yoan Gouffran

Newcastle United's French forward has fallen way down the pecking order under Steve McClaren's management and is could be set to leave the Magpies.

The 29-year-old offers versatility to play in either attack or out on the wing, and any Championship club who secures his services would be getting a really decent performer.

Since arriving in the North East from Bordeaux in 2013 he has netted 11 goals in 82 appearances, despite the majority of his game time being restricted to substitute appearances.

Jordan Rhodes

Just how serious the Leeds United hierarchy are about taking the Whites onto the next level, will depend on whether they can secure they services of the very best Championship players.

Blackburn Rovers striker Rhodes certainly comes into question when talking about the best players the league has to offer, and a move for a striker of such ilk would make other teams stand up and take notice of Leeds United.

Questions would have to be raised over whether or not Steve Evans has the pulling power to secure such a player and further questions would be raised over whether Rovers would consider selling to a divisional rival.
