Sheffield Wednesday have been a different side this season compared to last, with a host of new players and different faces in the boardroom changing the perspective of the club.

They were taken over by Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri in the summer, who replaced manager Stuart Gray with Carlos Carvalhal as well as some big money buys.

Last season, the Owls laboured in midfield and whilst their defence was solid with keeper Keiren Westwood amongst the best in the division, their strike force was ineffective and they were one of the lowest scorers in the Championship.

This ultimately cost them any chance at promotion, so Carvalhal's first port of call was to bolster the side's attacking options.

He did this with a mixture of youth and experience, firstly bringing young Portuguese striker Lucas Joao in, who impressed early on in the season with his clinical finishing and peripheral movement. His goals have dried up lately, but he is tipped for a big future in the game if he can recapture this form.

Also Gary Hooper and Fernando Forestieri were added to the striking options, and they have both been very successful since moving from their respective Premier League club.

Hooper struggled for game time at Norwich City earlier in the season, but a good loan spell at Hillsborough led to a permanent deal, and with 11 goals already he is one of the divisions most potent strikers.

Wednesday also stole Forestieri from under their rivals' noses, with the Watford striker the most sought-after player of the summer window. Since joining Wednesday, he has 13 goals, with his electric pace and technical ability giving him the ability to rip into defenders.

The strikers have been helped out by better creativity from midfield, with summer recruits Marco Matias and Barry Bannan lighting up the midfield with their excellent attacking movement.

The defence at Wednesday has been as solid as it was last season but, with the added goals, they are a threat to the play-off places.

They sit sixth but still harbour outside hopes of an automatic promotion place. FootballLeagueWorld writer Michael Hasan identifies FIVE ideal strikers Carvalhal may seek out to partner Hooper next season...

Ross McCormack

McCormack has been one of the most deadly strikers in the division for a couple of seasons now, despite playing for Fulham.

Fulham are relegation-threatened this season, sitting just one point clear of the bottom three and the goals of McCormack and Moussa Dembele are keeping them up.

Fulham are the division's second highest scorers, and McCormack's 19 goals makes him the second highest scorer.

But their attack is undone by their terrible defence, who are leakier than the Titanic.

If Fulham do stay up, they will need a clear-out of the backline, but also their top players like McCormack and Dembele may leave for better things, with Dembele linked to Tottenham Hotspur, and McCormack has been pursued for a long time by Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls certainly have the capital to make the move with the new chairman, and it would be a big statement of intent.

Nahki Wells

The Huddersfield Town striker has been impressive for the Yorkshire side as the Terriers endure another season of mediocrity.

They were relegation-threatened earlier in the season when Mark Robins was in charge and, when he was sacked, former assistant of Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund David Wagner was brought in to turn things around.

He has slowly managed building the side around Wells playing good, pressing football as he instills his philosophy which came to the fore in Saturday's impressive win at Leeds United.

Wells had 15 goals and is the league's fourth highest scorer, and he may fancy a new challenge at the improving Wednesday.

Patrick Bamford

At the start of the season, there was a lot of interest in Bamford from a host of Championship clubs.

The Chelsea youngster was extremely impressive for Middlesbrough last season, with his 19 goals nearly firing them to promotion, and he won Championship Player of the Year.

Upon his return to Chelsea, the rumours of a big money move to Wednesday or a loan deal was unfounded, and Bamford pursued the Premier League path instead with loan moves to Norwich City and Crystal Palace.

Sadly for Bamford, both these moves have been very unsuccessful, with him struggling to adapt to the pace of the Premier League.

In the summer, Sheffield Wednesday may retain their interest and go for him again.

The Czech striker has had a bad time of it since moving to Villa Park, with his stay blighted with injuries.

He showed a lot of potential in his native land, but has played rarely for Villa due to injury problems, and it may be time for him to move on as he is not part of manager Remi Garde's plans.

He has shown promise for the youth team at Villa though, and Sheffield Wednesday may feel they can give him some more game time and get the best out of him.

Dwight Gayle

Another highly sought-after Premier League striker is Crystal Palace youngster Dwight Gayle who, after an impressive spell in the Championship with Peterborough United, completed his Premier League journey by moving to Crystal Palace.

His time there has been blighted by inconsistency, with him producing moments of magic, like the two goals that ended Liverpool's title challenge a few years back, to being a player left on the bench.

He is seemingly not part of Alan Pardew's plans and is a wantaway.

There is no shortage of interest, with Bristol City agreeing a £8 million fee in the summer, but Gayle turned them down as they did not suit his ambition.

Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough also pursued him, but neither were willing to pay the hefty fee for him.

However, the Owls may reconsider in the summer though if they go up, as their finances will soar and a good, pacey striker is just what Hooper needs as help.
