With QPR in hot financial water, there will be increasing pressure to sell key assets if the right bid comes in.

That is why Sheffield United should put in a serious bid for Luke Freeman. The attacking midfielder is wanted by several clubs, but Steve McClaren will want to hold out for the right price.

The 26-year-old was one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise turgid campaign for the West London side. His five goals and 13 assists marked him as the attacking engine that kept Rangers ahead of the relegation scrap. His delivery from set pieces is consistently on point, so it was no surprise that 6ft6in Matt Smith was QPR’s top scorer for the season. However, he also has remarkable close ball control which allows him to set up attacks and hold the ball.

The issue comes with how much it will take to prise him from the Hoops’ grasp. Following their Financial Fair Play punishment, QPR are in need of paying a great deal to settle things. This happens to coincide with the ceasing of parachute payments. Often this would lead to a fire sale, but, with the exception of Alex Smithies, there have been no major sales. This is because QPR realise that they will struggle to pay the debts if they are relegated. If Freeman goes, they will be a relegation candidate.

However, if the Blades make a serious offer, QPR could have no choice but to accept. If they’re successful, they’ll have snaffled a serious piece of talent.
