Sheffield Wednesday are steeped in tradition and history as one of the oldest professional clubs in the Sky Bet Football League.

The Owls have spent most of its 149-year existence in the top-flight but are well-positioned in the Championship play-offs, to fight all the way for a first Premier League return since the turn of the century.

During that time, they have even dipped as low as League One but despite the ups and downs, there have been a number of players on their books who have stood out from the rest before moving on for pastures new.

Regardless of what division they are playing in next season, head coach Carlos Carvalhal should consider giving some of them a second chance at Hillsborough.

Football League World writer Adam Higgins identifies FIVE former players that Wednesday should look to re-sign in the summer transfer window….

Jacques Maghoma

The 28-year-old only left Wednesday last summer but has already proven why he should have been kept hold of, having slotted seamlessly in to Birmingham’s attack.

Maghoma was a fans’ favourite during his two seasons in south Yorkshire and, although his games to goal ratio is not prolific, the Congolese can affect a game in a matter of seconds with his raw talent.

With Jeremy Helan now on loan at Wolves and Aiden McGeady likely to return to Everton at the end of the season, Carvalhal should think long and hard about bringing back Maghoma to add another dimension to their forward line and appease the Wednesday supporters who admire him so much.

Reda Johnson

Solid if not spectacular, the versatile defender was a dependable figure during his four-year stay at Wednesday, two of which were spent in the Championship.

Now in his second season with Coventry City, the Benin international has proven he can play at a higher level than League One and continued his knack of chipping in with vital goals.

With a number of years of experience under his belt and leadership qualities aplenty, the 27-year-old would be the ideal figure to marshal the Wednesday defence and give the club more options at centre-back, right-back, or defensive midfield.

Ben Marshall

Wednesday fans would be forgiven for forgetting that Marshall was ever on their books, with the 24-year-old having made only 22 appearances for the club on loan during the 2011-12 season.

The Blackburn Rovers man, who has been equally astute at right-back as in midfield, has stepped up to the plate as a consistent performer at Ewood Park this term and is the club’s leading scorer with six goals since Jordan Rhodes left in January.

His versatility and ability is testament to his positive attitude and, although it may be difficult to capture his signature, Marshall would fit the bill perfectly as the type of player Wednesday need to be a successful team.

Marcus Tudgay

His goalscoring statistics may not inspire, scoring just seven since the start of 2013-14, but Tudgay offers a great deal more on and off the ball with his experience and tactical awareness.

At the age of 33, the former Nottingham Forest striker is heading towards the end of a career which saw him net one short of 50 goals in 196 games for Wednesday between 2006 and 2011.

With Lucas Joao struggling to make his mark, Tudgay could be the answer to supplement Fernando Forestieri and Gary Hooper if Carvalhal would be tempted to bring him back for a final swansong.

Chris Maguire

After a productive three-year stint at Hillsborough which yielded 18 goals in 79 outings, it was mystifying to see the 27-year-old move across Yorkshire to Championship rivals Rotherham United on a free transfer.

Having fallen out of favour at the New York Stadium, Maguire is currently plying his trade in League Two with Oxford United – a level which defies the quality he possesses as a set-piece specialist and penalty-box predator.

Boasting a proven track record stretching back to his time north of the border with Aberdeen, Maguire is undoubtedly worth another shout at and could still play a significant role for the Owls in the second tier.
