Ipswich are long standing members of the Championship and with experienced manager Mick McCarthy at the helm, they are looking to finally make there long awaited breakthrough to the Premier League.

They came close last season but were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by their biggest rivals Norwich.

Ipswich are looking stable this season and are in the race for the play-offs and currently sit just four points off sixth, and have a game in hand, having gone under the radar this season.

Their chances of automatic promotion have gone though and not many would fancy them in the play-offs as they're unlikely to get to the second leg of the semi-final at home, which often proves costly like it did for them last season.

Ipswich will need to strengthen either for a big promotion push next season in the Championship or if they improve, a squad good enough for the Premier League.

Here are FIVE former players Ipswich could re-sign in the summer to prepare for the new season which will be vital if they get promoted or not.......

Damien Delaney

The experienced Crystal Palace centre-back left Ipswich in 2012, and has been a first team regular for Palace during their stay in the Premier League, with well over 100 appearances.

He spent nearly 100 appearances at Ipswich and is now approaching his 35th birthday, and the quality of his play is declining.

Delaney has been dropped to the bench a few times this season with Scott Dann preferred to him in central defence ,and it may be time for Delaney to take a step down and find his level.

Delaney would surely welcome the chance to help his old club Ipswich to a long awaited promotion.

Gareth McAuley

The Irish defender is an experienced international footballer and has well over 100 appearances for West Brom, during their Premier League stint and had well over 100 appearances for Ipswich a few years ago.

McAuley like Delaney has also seen a decline in the quality of his play, and has been dropped a number of times with Brunt even being dropped back in defence.

He would also surely like nothing more than helping Ipswich get promoted.

Connor Wickham

This would be the perfect signing if they get promoted or not, as Wickham has failed to make an impression since leaving Ipswich for the Premier League.

He has gone from Sunderland to Crystal Palace but struggled at both clubs, and the pace of the Premier League has troubled him after he flourished in the Championship with Ipswich.

He is very capable at this level and also if Ipswich do get promoted, he may be able to prove he is up to this level by joining Ipswich.

Conor Hourihane

Conor Hourihane

The Barnsley midfielder is 25 years old and has been very impressive this season for the play -off hopefuls, and it makes you wonder why Ipswich ever got rid of the talented playmaker.

He has 13 goals this season and is on the brink of breaking into the national team, and is attracting glances from Championship sides.

Ipswich may wish to bring the youngster back and give him another chance, as he has certainly improved in his time at Barnsley.

Jonathan Walters

Jonathan Walters

Perhaps the most audacious of the lot, this would make a big statement if Ipswich are to sign him.

He has been a regular starter for Stoke during their successful spell in the Premier League, and has well over 100 games and nearly 40 goals.

Before this he had racked up well over 100 appearances for Ipswich and 30 goals.

Now that he grows older and Stoke evolves to a more vibrant midfield, there isn't a place for Walters anymore.
