Chelsea Football Club are arguably one of the most successful football clubs in the world at this period in time, as they strive once again to win back-to-back Premier League titles under Jose Mourinho.

The club are looking to recreate the feats of their 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 title winning seasons by aiming for the title once again, despite a poor start to the season for the 'special one' and his team.

However, despite their poor start to the season, the club still have some of the best players in the world within their ranks and they remain hopeful of a surge in form after their 2-0 win against fellow challengers Arsenal. There's no doubt that anything less than becoming Premier League winners once again would be classed as a failure for the London club as the expectations of the fans sky rocket.

However, despite the quality that Chelsea have at their disposal, there are a number of improvements that Mourinho could make to his side. And there are a number Football League players that could possibly excel at the Premier League champions.

So, here are Football League World's FIVE players that Chelsea should sign in the January transfer window!

1) Demarai Gray

Demarai Gray is a player of huge potential that will more than likely be playing in the Premier League in the future.

At just 19 years old, the youngster has been playing first-team football in the Sky Bet Championship for two full seasons and in the process, has been excelling as an attacking winger.

His ability to find the net and his lightening pace has given him the potential to become a future Premier League star as he continues his rapid development in the second-tier of English football.

There's no doubt that if he improves at his current rate for a number of seasons, then he will have the ability to excel at Chelsea Football Club.

After being subject to a £5m bid from Championship-winners Bournemouth, he decided to stay at Birmingham to maximise his potential as a young footballer. However, there's no doubt that the bid and his ability proves that he could make the step up to the top-flight in the near future.

He has also represented England at under-18, under-19 and under-20 level, giving him the breadth of experience needed to become a Premier-League player.

For now, he is ready to excite Birmingham fans in the Championship. But come January, Chelsea should invest in the youngster to add to their future stars. Even if that means loaning him back to a Championship club for the time being, he would still be a good investment for the Premier League giants as they look towards the future.

2) Benik Afobe

Benik Afobe's meteoric rise from League One striker with MK Dons to Championship star with Wolves is something that shouldn't go unnoticed by a range of Premier League outfits.

Illustratively, Norwich City have been tirelessy bidding for the 22 year old forward in an attempt to bolster their attacking options, as the Midlands club place a £14m price tag on his head to deflect interest in their star player.

This goes to show the quality that Afobe possesses as he continues to excel in the Sky Bet Championship.

There's no doubt that the striker has quality, as he has netted 16 times in 27 appearances in a Wolves' side that just missed out on the play-offs last season. And importantly, he is continuously improving as his career progresses, which remains a quality that is appreciated by clubs in the top-flight.

He is highly regarded as one of the best players in the Championship due to his ability to find the net and his physical presence up-front. Therefore, Chelsea should look to sign the striker in January to test whether or not he could make the step-up to the big time.

3) Henri Lansbury

There's no doubt that Henri Lansbury is a top Championship player, and as he is given more responsibility in Nottingham Forest's squad, he continues to excel as a dominant central midfielder.

An Arsenal youth prospect, the 24 year old was highly regarded as one of the Premier Leagues future stars. And that is becoming more of a reality as he continues to improve and become a key player in the Sky Bet Championship.

He is yet to be tested in the top-flight, but the charismatic midfielder has the passing ability and the authority on a football pitch that is needed to play well in the Premier League.

His footballing ability and his leadership qualities make him an ideal target for Premier League clubs who want to bolster their squads for this season.

Therefore, Chelsea should definitely look to the midfielder this January transfer window if they want to strengthen their midfield set-up.

4) Charlie Austin

Chelsea should certainly look to Charlie Austin this summer as a potential signing due to the fact that the 26 year old striker has already proven himself as a top goalscorer in the Premier League.

It has been heavily reported that Premier League interest in the striker has been severe, despite Austin's shock decision to stay with Sky Bet Championship club Queens Park Rangers.

Scoring 18 goals in his first top-flight season, he is certainly able to excel against some of the best teams in the world. The fact that he managed to do that in a struggling side, shows his ability to excel when given the chance in the top-flight.

It is unlikely that the talismatic forward would be chosen ahead of controversial striker Diego Costa, but with Costa's aggressive tendencies, there's no doubt that Austin would be a good addition to Jose Mourinhos Chelsea squad.

Strength in depth is always desirable at a top-four Premier League club, and with Chelsea looking to improve their form, Charlie Austin would be an adept signing for the Premier League champions.

5) Lewis Cook

When considering Chelsea's youth set-up, it is clear that Lewis Cook would be an ideal fit for Chelsea as they look towards the future.

The 18 year old has already become a key first-team regular for West-Yorkshire side Leeds United as he continues his rapid development into a fantastic player.

At such a young age, the youngster has already made 38 starts for Leeds United, scoring 4 times from a central-midfield role. That level of experience at such a young age is something that will be valued by top-flight clubs as interest mounts.

His movement and composure in the middle of the park has made him a fan favourite at Elland Road due to the excitement that such a young player generates.

It's unlikely that he would be placed in the Chelsea first-team squad straight away, but he would be a quality addition for Chelsea if they are looking towards the future when signing new talent.
