Coventry City have had a disastrous 2016 so far that has seen them fall from potential automatic promotion candidates, to a position where the play-offs already look out of reach.

Mowbray deserves credit for the progress his side have made after nearly suffering relegation last term, but with the squad he has at his disposal, Sky Blues fans will no doubt be very disappointed that this season now looks unlikely to yield the success that it promised a few months back.

It's difficult to understand quite what has happened at the Ricoh Arena in recent weeks, but there have been a lot of players under performing for quite a while now, and this will concern Mowbray as his side now need to win the vast majority of their remaining games to keep faint play-off hopes alive.

FLW's Tom Percival gives his opinion and looks at FIVE Coventry City players who have not pulled their weight this season, and subsequently may not be at the Ricoh Arena next campaign.....

Sam Ricketts

The experienced international was immediately handed the responsibility of captaining the side upon his arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and quite simply hasn't been playing by example.

He started off very confidently in his centre-half position alongside Reda Johnsonn, as Coventry made an explosive start to the season.

However since Johnson's injury, Ricketts hasn't looked the same player, and no matter where he has been played across the defence, he has been below the levels Coventry fans would expect.

At 34 years of age, many of the Ricoh Arena faithful would be happy to see the back of Ricketts, whose underwhelming Coventry career looks set to end in mid-table mediocrity.

Joe Cole

With such huge expectations placed on Joe Cole as he made his astonishing switch to the League 1 club, it's difficult not to label him a disappointment.

He has scored 2 goals in 17 starts which is not good enough for a man with over 50 caps for England.

Age seems to have caught up with the man who was won everything there is to be won at the highest level of English football, and he seems set for a switch to the United States in the summer.

It may have been a major transfer coup, but Cole unfortunately hasn't had the impact that many Sky Blues fans were dreaming of.

Marc-Antoine Fortune

Another player brought in with vast experience by Tony Mowbray, Fortune hasn't been a threat to League 1 defences anywhere near as regularly as he should be.

Seemingly the perfect fit for the physicality of the third tier, there have only been a handful games where the 34-year-old has made a genuine impact, not enough from a man who has Premier League and Champions League experience.

With his one-year deal coming to an end in the summer, there won't be many Coventry fans clambering to see him get a new deal as Mowbray will once again have to revamp his squad.

Gael Bigirimana

Gael BigirimanaGael Bigirimana

The Newcastle loanee came through the academy at Coventry City and was hugely impressive up until his move to the North East.

The move to the Premier League never really worked out for the Burundi international, so a temporary stint at his hometown club seemed the perfect way to reignite his career, but unfortunately it hasn't worked out that way.

The once fearless midfielder now looks completely shot of confidence and it shows in his play.

Bigiramana looks like a shadow of the player he was four years ago, and it has meant that he has frequently been unable to make it to the match day squad due to loan restrictions.

Coventry may have the option to buy Bigirimana in the summer, but it currently seems unlikely that they would take it.

Stephen Hunt

Stephen HuntStephen Hunt

A fairly recent arrival having impressed manager Tony Mowbray during a trial, Hunt has had little impact on the first-team during his time with the Sky Blues.

Another experienced Premier League player, a lot of these acquisitions have looked past their best, and a change in approach of recruitment maybe required by Coventry in the summer to ensure the same mistakes don't happen again.

Hunt was thrown straight into the starting line-up for a couple of games where he failed to impress. Since then he has hardly featured. and looks set to leave the West Midlands just a few months after he arrived. His short-term deal only runs until the summer, and it seems unlikely he will be around next campaign.
