Things haven't been going well for Newcastle in recent seasons, and this campaign under Steve McClaren is arguably one of the worst in the club's history.

Despite a number of big money signings, the Toon Army just aren't clicking as a team and the club's Head Coach will undoubtedly have one eye on the January transfer window, when he can bring in some reinforcements.

McClaren's side look in real danger of going down this season and one of their biggest problems has been scoring goals, and there are a number of options for them in the Championship.

While it would present some risk by dropping down to the second tier to find the man to save them, the quality of goal scorers in the Championship is terrific and they may be able to put away some of the chances that they create.

Here are FIVE Championship strikers that Newcastle should sign in January......

While Fulham haven't had the best start to the season, one of their star players this season has been the man that cost them £11m last summer from Leeds United.

He has scored more than 15 goals in three of his last four seasons, including 19 in his first season with the Cottagers last term.

He has already reached 10 in all competitions this year and looks set to continue his goal scoring form, so Newcastle could do a lot worse than sign the Scottish striker and give him a chance in the Premier League.

Jordan Rhodes

The prolific Blackburn striker was linked with both of Newcastle's North East neighbours this summer, with both Middlesbrough and Sunderland strongly linked with the Scotland international.

He has spent his past three seasons in the Championship scoring more than 20 league goals in every season, and he actually scored 40 goals in 45 games for Huddersfield in his last season for the club.

Although Blackburn are likely to have a hefty price tag on the 25-year old, he guarantees goals and he could save Newcastle from relegation if they decided to make a move for him in January.

Chris Martin

The Derby striker is a player that Newcastle manager Steve McClaren knows all about, after he spent nearly two years with the 27-year old as he scored 46 goals in 101 games.

His power as well as his goal scoring ability would make him a popular figure on Tyneside, and after working with the Newcastle manager before, Martin may fancy the move.

He has seven goals already this season so, like others on this list, he would not come cheap but Mike Ashley may need to get his chequebook out if his side are to stay in the Premier League.

Charlie Austin

The QPR striker was one of many players on Steve McClaren's wish list this summer, but his club's price tag seemingly proved too high for a Premier League team to sign him.

He has admitted that he would rather wait until the summer, but if Newcastle came in and made him an offer that he couldn't refuse, then the man who scored 18 goals last season could be playing at St James' Park.

He has Premier League experience and has proved that he can still score goals in a struggling team, so he would present value for money, especially as his price tag is set to drop significantly.

Benik Afobe

Trying to convince Wolves to sell their star striker given their current crisis upfront may not be an easy task, but if it can be done then Afobe would repay that faith with goals.

The former Arsenal man was in superb form last season, scoring 32 goals in all competitions for Kenny Jackett's side and then League One MK Dons.

His athleticism and pace means that he would certainly cope in the Premier League, and Newcastle's scouting team should be watching the 22-year old if they're not already.
