As another season is set to draw to a close at Bramall Lane, it is again a feeling of disappointment for Blades fans, who have seen their team struggle for most of the season and ultimately, come up short in the hunt for a play-off place.

With over 10 players out of contract in the summer and a huge squad overhaul due to take place, manager Nigel Adkins will be looking for new recruits no doubt.

At a recent fans forum with the Chairman, many fans expressed concerns that the club had made poor signings, with the club often targeting players on their way down the leagues, rather than on their way up.

Saying that though, there are still players in the Championship who are on the fringes of their current squads, who could offer something down in League One, especially in a push for promotion which Blades fans will once again expect next term.

Here are FIVE Championship players Sheffield United could sign to mount a promotion charge.......

Dan Burn

A long courted target for manager Nigel Adkins, the Blades reportedly failed with numerous bids during the last transfer window to land the big defender.

United clearly see Burn as someone who is suited to League One football due to his height and presence, so the time is now if they want to go and get their man.

Burn started plenty of games for the Cottagers last term, but as Fulham will be rebuilding themselves during the summer, it may be that Burn is available Blades boss Adkins to go and finally secure.

Kevin McDonald

The Wolves playmaker and former Sheffield United man has recently been dropped from the squad, with many reports leading us to believe that he will be off in the summer.

Sheffield United are crying out for a top central midfielder, and McDonald can be just that.

Wages may well be a stumbling block and he might not be welcomed with open arms by some fans at Bramall Lane, but from a footballing point of view, he has the tools needed to be a class above in League One, as he proved with Wolves a few seasons ago.

Alex Baptiste

The defender is currently on loan with the Bramall Lane club, and has impressed in the main with a string of solid displays for the Blades.

Baptiste seems to have enjoyed his time with the club, and with his parent club looking at a promotion to the Premier League, it may well suit him to make the move to United.

He suffered a serious injury over 12 months ago, but has come roaring back and slotted back into first team action with relative ease. He would be an excellent permanent addition to the team.

Kieran Agard

The former Rotherham United striker made the move to Bristol City for what was a fairly hefty fee at the time, and despite a good first season, he has struggled since.

Agard has bags of pace and an eye for a goal, and pace is something the Blades have lacked all season long.

If United are serious about promotion next term, then they need to add more firepower to the team to supplement that of Che Adams and Billy Sharp already in the team.

Agard could well be a perfect fit for that need.

Alex Revell

I have mentioned Revell before in some of my previous articles, but I firmly believe that to get out of League One, you need a good big man to lead the line. Revell does just that.

He proved during his time with Rotherham United that he was a capable forward, and while he might not always bag the amount of goals that people may crave, his work rate and ability to dominate aerially is something to be admired.

He would be an excellent option to lead the Blades front line, and someone who may well be available, and fancy a move back to South Yorkshire following his stint with the Millers.
