Coventry City have had a turbulent season.

The Sky Blues ended the 2015/16 season with an brilliant 3-1 win over Sheffield United at the Ricoh on Saturday.

It was the club’s third consecutive home victory as Mowbray’s side ended an unusual campaign on a high with a third consecutive victory at the Ricoh Arena.

Marc-Antoine Fortune, Andy Rose and Ruben Lameiras scored the City goals but the problems do lie with their faltering promotion push this year.

This is particularly evident as The Sky Blues were high flying at the beginning of the campaign and have now sunk to ninth in the table.

Coventry certainly have the credentials to move up the league next season, here are FLW Conor McGilligan's FIVE picks that could help them secure promotion next season.....

Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson

Johann Berg Gudmundsson

After Charlton have been sent to the third tier of English football they have issued their notion to buy and sell this coming summer window.

Gudmundsson could be one player to leave, if Coventry are serious about mounting a promotion push next year and Charlton are looking to offload, Gudmundsson would be a superb addition.

The Icelandic international has quality in abundance in the final third of the pitch with a devastating ability to finish, mirroring that of international teammate Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Gudmundsson would be experience in the changing room but also would be able to link up with an Armstrong-esk talent very well to create key chances.

In particular Gudmundsson provides goals and assists, and after proving his worth on Saturday by being Charlton's best player against a strong Leeds United side, the Icelandic international is conveying is obvious pedigree.

Stephen Dobbie

dobbie

Dobbie hasn't had the most successful season for Bolton with a lack of goals and a lack of influence. However, when at the right level Dobbie could be a force to be reckoned with.

His cunning eye for goal and experience has made him a threat for Blackpool in particular and glimpses have been shown at Bolton.

His goals have never been prolific but the tireless Dobbie gives teams another dimension, another outlet. Heading, versatility and an experienced head in the changing room, with the experience of promotion proving vital.

With Bolton already suggesting the need for change within the squad, Dobbie could be one to move on.

Coventry City, if they acquired Dobbie would be gaining a striker with reliable and perfect third tier attributes. Linking up with a striker of Adam Armstrong's pedigree The Sky Blues could drum up a superb partnership.

Neil Kilkenny

Neil Kilkennyms

The Scotsman has had prolific experience within League One that would be vital for any team trying to achieve promotion.Kilkenny has done it twice, recently with a Preston squad who ran away with the playoff final.

An underrated individual, Kilkenny boasts a wide range of passing, leadership qualities and a tireless effort. Kilkenny was signed by Simon Grayson and went on to become one of Preston North End's best players in League One.

The Scotsman has been overlooked recently with an array of talent in the Preston ranks which sees Kilkenny warming up the bench as Preston record a highly successful return to the second tier of English football.

His abilities attracted the attention of top clubs including Palace, Norwich, Boro and Derby whilst he was at Leeds United, but the Yorkshiremen managed to fend off interest with a promotion push that saw them return to The Championship a season later.

If Coventry were able to tilt Kilkenny's head and bring him to the third tier of English football, the out of favour Preston man could be a super acquisition and one to look for in the future if Coventry were to mount a challenge.

Alex Bruce

With a possible new backline of Dawson and Maguire for Hull City Alex Bruce, son of manager Steve may be prized away from the KC.

A strong leader and with experience in League One and at the top level of English football, Bruce's quality and experience could prove pivotal for any League One team in the race for the playoffs.

Bruce has had experience with Leeds United in League One and managed to gather a number of first team appearances before being signed by his father at Hull.

Bruce would be a solid addition for Coventry if they were able to pry him away from Hull, that experience and know how in the spine of the team could be the difference between midtable and promotion.

Jermaine Beckford

After being one of the most sought out strikers in League One at one point for Leeds United, Beckford's career has had it's positives and negatives.

His record in League One however cannot be overlooked. His tally for Leeds United got him the call from the Premier League with a host of clubs looking at the striker.

Not only this but he was also part of a hugely successful Simon Grayson Preston North End team who triumphed in the League One play-off final, with Beckford being the star of the show.

The 32-year-old has proven it consistently at this level and his addition should not be overlooked. A cheap price tag and a bundle of goals could await Coventry if they ever chose to take a punt on the Jamaican veteran.
