As the Sky Bet Championship gets more and more popular, it attracts more and more stars of the game.

With TV revenue rocketing in both the Premier League and the second tier, the top teams in the division have plenty of money to spend on young talent, plus well established stars across the continent looking to play in England.

Joey Barton and Andre Gray are just two players who have chosen the Championship when, more than likely, a Premier League place would have been assured to them.

The idea of helping a team achieve promotion to the top flight is becoming increasingly attractive, and this season is no anomaly in that it has brought some great players in to the Football League.

Here, in the opinion of FLW's Ryan Evans, is FIVE Championship players that have done nothing for the team they signed for......

1) Andreas Weimann

weimannnn

When Derby County signed Weimann from Aston Villa in the summer for £2.5 million, their rivals would have been worried that Derby would be serious contenders, despite the Austrian falling in the pecking order after Tim Sherwood arrived at Villa Park.

As it turned out, they had nothing to fear over his signature. What looked like an extremely good move for the Rams turned out to be one of the biggest flops of the summer.

With just three league goals from 12 starts and 17 further substitute appearances, Weimann has not only struggled to nail down a first team spot but also to make any sort of difference after finding his way onto the pitch.

At 24 years old, he was thought to be one of the most promising talents at the Midlands-based club earlier in his career, but that hasn't come to fruition. He has three appearances since late February and will be looking to do better next term.

2) Alex Pearce

Another Derby player, Alex Pearce was one of the most feared names in the division during his last season at Reading.

Again, what was looked upon as one of the best signings of the summer, a free transfer from the Madejski to the iPro, turned out horribly as Pearce played just twice for the Rams, not one of them being in the league.

Such was his ranking in then-Derby boss Paul Clement's squad, he was sent on loan to lowly Bristol City in January, and has even struggled to get into their side. With just one league start and four more sightings from the bench, this has been a miserable season for the 27-year old.

3) Matthew Upson

upson

The veteran defender was a part of Leicester's team that performed the great escape from relegation, but found himself out of the club in the summer, with new manager Claudio Ranieri preferring Robert Huth and Wes Morgan.

He moved to Milton Keynes for free in the summer, and has been unable to perform a similar feat in Karl Robinson's team as the Dons find themselves already down.

Despite the notable record of MK Dons being unbeaten in the seven games where Upson has appeared, just one of those has been starts as Upson yet again finds himself unable to get first team football.

He has plenty of experience, with 21 caps for the Three Lions and even scored in their 4-1 defeat to Germany in the last 16 of the 2010 World Cup.

Can Upson find himself a team for next season?

4) Shola Ameobi

ameobiiiii

Ameobi is best known for his spell at Newcastle, making 312 league appearances in his time at the club. The 34-year old, after an unsuccessful spell at Crystal Palace in the Premier League, dropped down to the third tier to play for Bolton Wanderers in October of last year.

It, sadly, has been unsuccessful, and he has ended up scoring just two in eight appearances for the Trotters. He was released for the second time in a season in February, where he joined League One Fleetwood, for whom he has scored once in ten appearances.

The Macron will not be a place that the striker remembers fondly, and it remains to be seen whether Highbury Stadium will or won't be.

5) Yaya Sanogo

On loan at Charlton from Premier League Arsenal, Sanogo seems to have turned up for just the one game this season, that a 4-3 defeat to Reading, where he scored a hat-trick.

With eight appearances to his name, he hasn't been able to get any football regularly, and that will frustrate Arsene Wenger.

The striker's time on loan at Ajax earlier this season didn't end much better either, with just three substitute appearances and not a goal to his name whilst in Amsterdam.
