Manchester United currently sit top of the Premier League for the first time in over 100 weeks - quite an astonishing statistic for a side who spent 26-years under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning silverware for fun.

With January coming around quicker than an Anthony Martial debut goal, talks will turn towards how Louis van Gaal will strengthen his squad, as he looks to win his first trophy as United boss.

Blessed with an array of talent at present the United boss arguably doesn't need any new signings to come to Old Trafford during the January transfer window and may opt to chance his arm with his current crop.

Should he wish to add to his group however, here are FIVE Football League players that the Dutch manager should add to his squad!

Charlie Austin

United aren't blessed with a massive group of strikers and despite Anthony Martial's flying start to life at United, the boss may look to add another one.

Austin netted 18-goals for Queens Park Rangers last season which is pretty impressive considered he was playing for a team that would eventually be relegated from the Premier League.

Doubts have been cast over Austin's injury problems and his ability to stay fit year upon year playing in the top flight.

Should van Gaal opt for a striker, he could do a lot worse that getting Austin in as back-up to the first-choice pair of Wayne Rooney and Martial.

Lewis Cook

Leeds United midfielder is one of the most promising talents currently playing in the Championship and looks destined to move to the Premier League, with or without Leeds.

Cook has already been scouted by Chelsea and Liverpool and it would amaze me should some of the other big boys not take a look too - including United.

With Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger not getting any younger, January would be a perfect time for United to land Cook to allow him to learn from the two veterans before they move on.

Could prove a controversial transfer given the rivalry between Leeds United and Manchester United, but van Gaal won't be too bothered by that if Cook fulfills his potential.

Lucas Piazon

Strictly speaking Piazon would not be able to join United in the January transfer window as he is currently on loan from United's Premier League rivals Chelsea to Championship club Reading.

Nonetheless, the Brazilian is destined for a big future in the game and is starting to show glimpses of his potential for the Royals.

The 21-year-old netted his first goal for Steve Clarke's side in Saturday's 2-1 win over Burnley and there is certainly more to come from the youngster.

The forward could add some flair to United's front three and would act as perfect back-up for Dutch star Memphis Depay.

Teddy Bishop

The 19-year-old Ipswich Town academy prospect looks certain to be around the top end of English football at some point in his professional career.

He burst onto the Championship scene last season and played over 30 games in his first season after graduating from the youth team.

If one club in the Premier League could get the best out of Bishop, I think it could well be United who could nurture the midfielder into a top player.

An injury has hampered his progress so far this season but he is expected to return sooner rather than later.

Tom Ince

Ince continues to set the Championship alight, picking up where he left off last season, when he netted 11 goals in 18 games during a loan spell at the iPro Stadium.

Having signed a permanent deal with the Rams in the summer it is highly unlikely that Paul Clement would want to lose Ince so soon after his arrival - but money does talk.

The son of former United midfielder Paul, would jump at the chance to join United and one day his ability may seem him secure a dream move to Old Trafford.

Doubts over his work rate could see a move stall for now, but only time will tell whether Ince will be good enough to make the grade at a top English club like Manchester United.
