Newcastle United spent heavily in the summer and sit 17th in the Premier League, and it also looks like Steve McClaren will be adding to his squad further in January - and he may well look at bringing in some talent from the Championship.

The Championship is full of talented midfielders who could easily ply their trade in the Premier League.

Manager Steve McClaren was in the Championship last season with Derby County so will have good knowledge of the talent on offer, and he could potentially raid his former club.

Although the gap between the Championship and the Premier League is relatively large, there is no doubt that a lot of midfielders could make the step up to the top-flight, with ease.

Here are FIVE Championship midfielders who Newcastle United should look to sign......

Alex Mowatt

Mowatt has plenty of admirers in the Premier League and rightly so, he comfortable on the ball and has a real eye for goal.

Newcastle may be looking for midfielder who can score in January, and the 21-year-old fits the bill with several goals this season for Leeds United.

The Yorkshire club will undoubtedly be keen to keep hold of one of their most prized assets, but if a sizeable offer is tabled, Leeds may find it too hard to refuse.

Demarai Gray

Hull City have joined in the race for Demaria Gray

Young, pacey, direct, Demarai Gray has been on the radar of several Premier League clubs including Bournemouth, and it seems only a matter of time before he joins a Premier League side.

The England Youth international would add some extra pace in the wide areas for Newcastle as they dont have many natural wide players.

Both Gray and Rolando Aarons could provide a lethal wing partnership in the future for the Magpies.

Jeff Hendrick

Steve McClaren will know a lot about Jeff Hendrick after managing him last year at Derby, and he may look at the Derby man as an option to bolster his midfield.

Hendrick is one of the best central midfielders in the league and is still quite young, and will surely be playing in the Premier League sooner or later.

The Republic of Ireland international could turn out to be a long-term solution for the Magpies in the middle of the park.

Lewis Cook

Cook has a very bright future ahead of him, and the Leeds academy graduate is almost certainly destined to be a Premier League regular.

Even at 18, Cook could fit in at Premier League club such as Newcastle and could add some dynamism and energy to the Magpies midfield.

Tom Huddlestone

Could Tom Huddlestone be heading to QPR in January?

The Hull City man has a lot of top flight experience and is a calm influence in midfield.

Huddlestone has a habit of scoring goals from range and has chipped in with some goals for Hull this term.

Huddlestone would add some experience and a goal threat from midfield and may jump at the opportunity to play in the Premier League again.
