With Liverpool having an indifferent start to the season, new manager Jurgen Klopp may well be looking to add some quality to his squad in January, and he could do a lot worse than look in the Championship.

The Merseysiders midfield has been pinpointed as a weakness in their squad, particularly on the wings where they lack some power and pace.

The departure of Steven Gerrard and the injury inflicted to Jordan Henderson means that they lack some depth in central midfield, particularly a player who will run from box-to-box.

There are some top quality players in the Championship and while the jump up to play for a club the size of Liverpool would be considerable, with time and the opportunity from Klopp, they could definitely achieve this and be a success at Anfield.

Here are FIVE Championship midfielders that Liverpool could sign in January......

The Queens Park Rangers winger was one of a few stars in the R's squad last season, as they finished bottom of the Championship and dropped back down to the second tier.

The 24-year old was widely expected to move on this summer but a move never materialised and he remains at Loftus Road for the foreseeable future.

A move to Anfield would be a big step up for the Scotland international but he would offer a different option for Klopp and he has the power to battle even the best full-backs in the Premier League.

Demarai Gray (Birmingham City)

While Demarai Gray may look like a long-term option for Liverpool, the emergence of a number of Liverpool youngsters recently mean that he may well get an opportunity to impress before long.

The 19-year old could potentially match what Jordan Ibe has achieved under the German manager so far should he make a move to Anfield in January.

There would be a lot of pressure on the England under-20 international to succeed but with Klopp's history of integrating young players in the team, a move to Merseyside could be a wise one for Gray.

Tom Ince (Derby County)

A player who started his career at Anfield is Derby County's Tom Ince and he could very well make the move to Anfield, particularly after being linked with a return in the past.

Although he only signed a permanent deal with The Rams in the summer, a big money offer from Jurgen Klopp's men could tempt Paul Clement into cashing in on the former England under-21 international.

With what Ince can offer a side, Liverpool could do a lot worse than sign him as, with the right opportunities, he could still become a big star.

Lewis Cook (Leeds United)

A central midfielder with a lot of potential could do a lot worse than making a move to Anfield in the January, as he is someone who could go on to have a long and successful career with The Reds.

While he would certainly be a long-term option for Klopp, Cook could still move to Anfield and act as back-up while also developing while he works with world-class coaches.

With interest expected to be high in the 18-year old, he could present a reasonable option for Cook, short-term and long-term.

Will Hughes (Derby County)

Although the England under-21 international has a serious knee injury at the moment, Liverpool could still make a move for Hughes if his recovery is going well by the time the winter transfer window comes around.

The 20-year old has had a number of admiring glances since he made his Rams' debut in 2011 and he has been linked with a move to Anfield on a number of occasions in the past.

While a move to Liverpool will be dependant on Hughes' rehab, working with some world-class coaches at Anfield could allow him to realise his potential.
