Portsmouth fans can paradoxically be both satisfied and disappointed with their start to the 2016/17 EFL League Two campaign, but they look a team on the ascent with Paul Cook at the helm.

Paul Cook’s men sit 5th in the table after 17 games, winning 8 times, drawing 4 times, and losing 5 times, and face a Luton Town side on Tuesday night who are also strong promotion contenders.

However, for some of the Fratton Park faithful, the play-offs just aren’t good enough, especially with a magnificent pre-season as far as transfers go.

With the high profile signings of Carl Baker, Milan Lalković and David Forde to name a few, Portsmouth were dubbed by some as the outright favourites to win the League Two title at the start of the campaign or, failing that, automatic promotion at the very least.
But lacklustre performances and stuttering form mean that Pompey are 5 points off the automatic promotion spots and a disappointing 10 points off top spot.
Here, FLW writer George Harbey takes a look at FIVE Championship loanees who would be PERFECT for Pompey in January...

Jorge Grant

The 22-year-old has been a breath of fresh air for Nottingham Forest this term, despite the Reds enduring a dismal start to their Championship campaign.
Grant has made 16 appearances for Forest, with 5 coming this year, however a loan move to another side where he is playing regularly would be beneficial for the progress in his career.
If Cook can pull this move off, it would be a fantastic coup.

Tennai Watson

Watson is highly regarded by Reading fans, and a large number feel that the 19-year-old should be starting for Jaap Stam's Royals.
He has made 2 appearances for the Berkshire club, and is on the verge of being called up to the England under-20 squad.
Pompey need defensive cover if they are to withstand the duration of the harsh, gruelling League Two environment, hence why Watson would be a superb addition.

Josh Murphy

Josh Murphy
The highly rated Norwich City youngster has made a fine start to his professional career, however has failed to make the impact that his twin brother Jacob has made at Carrow Road this season.
Josh, 21, made 42 appearances for MK Dons last term, and netted 5 times from midfield as they slipped out of the Championship.
There is no disputing that Pompey have the funds to lure Murphy away from Carrow Road on a loan move, and would be a perfect player to place on the left wing.

Jordan Lyden

The 20-year-old was a breath of fresh air for Aston Villa last year in what was a truly dismal season for the West Midlands club.
The Australian has made 3 appearances for the Villans, and is highly regarded by the Villa Park faithful, as he is definitely one for the future.
Pompey have the likes of Danny Rose, Amine Linganzi, and Michael Doyle under their ranks, who are all solid midfielders, however both Pompey and Lyden would benefit from a switch to Fratton Park.

Ivan Toney

Toney's loan spell at Shrewsbury Town ends in January and Pompey should really look to enquire about his services in January.
After 13 goals in 60 games for Northampton Town across all competitions, the 20-year-old joined Newcastle for a reported fee of £1million in 2015, and has netted 6 times in 14 games for Paul Hurst's Shrewsbury this term.
Big things have been tipped for Pompey's Conor Chaplin this term, however a partnership between him and Toney could really spearhead Pompey to promotion.
