As the Championship season drew to a close at the weekend, barring the end of season play-off games to come, many clubs will have looked at the league table thinking what might have been.

Burnley, Boro, and Brighton were seemingly in a class of their own throughout, while a handful of clubs contested the top six spots over the course of the season, but without any other club really infiltrating those positions.

There are always teams who underachieve, in whatever tournament or league in world football, whether that be the likes of France at the last few international tournaments, or teams like Sheffield United down in League One, who seem to have hit a brick wall.

This season in the Championship is no different when we take that thought into account, and plenty of clubs, managers, and chairmen will be thinking what has gone wrong as the summer approaches.

So, here are FIVE clubs who have underachieved in the Championship this term.......

Fulham

Few can deny that Fulham would have been relegated, if it wasn't for the fact they had Ross McCormack and Moussa Dembele on the books.

The strikers scored almost 40 goals in the league between them this season, and many now expect interest in the two going into the summer.

However, that aside, and taking into account you have two of the top strikers outside the Premier League on your books, finishing 5th from bottom is appalling.

The Cottagers have enough talent across the rest of the squad to not be finishing in that lowly position, and next season fans and the board alike will expect much better under current manager Jokanovic.

Reading

A lowly 17th placed finish for the Royals represents only a 2 place improvement on last term, and is simply not acceptable to some fans at this moment in time.

Many blame the change in management and instability in the dug out, while some blame the attitudes of certain players.

Reading had enough talent on their books on paper to at least mount some sort of play-off push, but fell nowhere near.

The likes of Matej Vydra, Hal Robson Kanu, and Danny Williams failed to hit expected levels, and much more will be expected from the club next season.

Wolves

Last season, Wolves finished just outside the play-off positions, and many expected them to challenge again.

However, fast forward 12 months, and following the sale of prolific striker Benik Afobe, Kenny Jacketts men have fell somewhat short of that expectation.

A 14th place finish this season represents a massive dip for the Molinuex club, and is something fans may show some concern about if certain things are not rectified going into next season.

A final day win over Sheffield Wednesday will have given some hope, but Jackett needs to sort his squad and quickly going into pre season, if Wolves are to halt this seasons slide and improve next time round.

Derby County

Yes the Rams made the play-offs, but after spending over £25m throughout the season, surely that was the very bare minimum expected?

They ended up being well short of the pace set by the top 2, and finished the season in 5th place, 11 points off the automatic promotion places.

They may well win the play-offs, and leave me with egg on my face, but as things stand, Derby have underachieved for the investment made in the squad.

Dropping down from the Premier League can sometimes prove trickier than people expect, and so this has proved to be the case with Queens Park Rangers.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has done a good job of steadying the ship though since being appointed, and moved the club away from what many feared would be a second successive relegation.

However, it does not hide away from the fact the R's have underachieved, with the squad and players at their disposal, a top 6 push should really have been the minimum expectation this season.

Rangers fans though will be confident Hasselbaink can continue to turn things round, and they may well challenge higher up next season.
