It's been a tough season for Wednesday fans, they've never really been in the play off race and have perhaps only recently felt safer from the drop too.

They were once a top-flight staple, regular cup finalists and firmly a part of the top clubs, but times change. They're desperate for a return to their former glory but at present, Sheffield is red. That will hurt far more than their current league position.

It isn't as if Jos Luhukay doesn't have good players at Hillsborough. Jordan Rhodes is as close to a 'proven striker' as you'll ever get, yet he's not putting the ball in the net. Gary Hooper has been injured, Barry Bannan the same. These are key players who could and should be competing in a top six side.

The season is drawing to a close now and as it does, a fresh hope will descend on each and every club in the Championship and beyond. Luhukay has a huge job on in the summer, injecting fresh life into a one-time giant of the English game. His very future will hinge on getting the key decisions right, so here is the FLW guide to his best XI when everyone is fit.

Westwood is one of the best goalkeepers in the league.

He and Joe Wildsmith are both class but Westwood remains number one.

Hunt is a Yorkshireman, born and bred and that carries some weight in Sheffield.

He can play right midfield, but is best deployed as the right-sided wing back in a 5-3-2 formation. That has been preferred this season.

Boyd isn't a left back, but he has been deployed on the left side of defence on a 'needs must' basis.

Luhukay has to address this in the summer.

The 34-year old might be approaching the end of his career, but he's still experienced enough to lead the line, for now.

He's the club captain and highly influential at Hillsborough.

Tom Lees is vice-captain and another Owls stalwart.

He's tall, dominant in the air and operates well in a three-man central defence.

Venancio is on loan from Vitoria in Portugal and has shown some quality on the ball in the middle of the park.

I'm not sure he has a long term future with the Owls. They've been linked with various centre backs recently and he is likely to return to Portugal at the end of his loan spell.

Reach is an attacking midfielder, usually sat on the left side of the three man grouping.

He's been at Hillsborough since 2016 and is approaching 100 appearances.

Bannan has been out injured and when he is, they miss him immensely.

The former Villa midfielder oozes class and is critical to the Owls progression.

Pelupessy was Luhukay's first signing at the club and therefore almost certainly part of the first team set up.

He's there to break up play in the middle of the park and provide balls out wide to the wing backs.

Hooper has been a huge miss for the Owls this season, when he's fit he scores goals.

If only he'd remained injury free, maybe the season could have been different.

Don't shoot me down Owls fans, whatever his performances suggest, he is a class act.

Given time to forge a relationship with Hooper, I'm sure he'd start repaying that £10m price tag.
