Chris Gunter has been at Reading for seven years, but over the summer was cast out by former manager Jose Gomes.

The Welsh right-back has had an inconsistent spell at right-back during his time at the Royals but has always been a loyal servant to the club and played when required.

Gomes decided to take matters into his own hands with a number of senior players over the summer and told them that they had to train with the under-23s and that they had no place in the first-team.

Gunter was one of those players, but now with the appointment of new manager Mark Bowen he now has an opportunity to regain a spot in the match day squad.

The full-back played 1678 minutes for the Royals last season as they battled to survive in the Championship under two different bosses in Gomes and Paul Clement.

He received five yellow cards during his time and was often played out of position as he was playing left-back in the side due to Andy Yiadom's excellent form on the right side. Since the summer, Gomes had opted to play Yiadom on the right, with youngster Teddy Howe as backup, whilst Jordan Obita and Omar Richards fight for the left-back position.

Last season he was able to complete 70% of his passes which is actually quite a high proportion that are accurate. That probably came with the type of style that the Portuguese boss was trying to play at the club, and helped those type of stats.

Saying that, defensively his stats weren't as good. He won just 45.1% of his aerial duels, which even though he's not the tallest, he has to have a better ratio than that due to hardly ever battling for an aerial duel in the opposition half.

In terms of his overall defensive duels, he won just 49.6% of them which is a poor tally and shows just how often he was at fault in the Reading defence. His stats aren't positive and it suggests that Yiadom will be the right-back at Reading for the foreseeable future.

He can bring positivity through his leadership skills, although Gomes made Liam Moore captain, and Bowen has stated that he's not going to change that after arriving at the club.

It'll be interesting to see what part Gunter has to play, or whether he's part of training just so no one feels segregated at the club.
