Chelsea are seemingly edging closer to confirming the appointment of Frank Lampard, with talkSPORT recently reporting that an announcement could be made in the next 48 hours.

The Blues are currently without a manager, after Maurizio Sarri left in favour of a move to Italian giants, Juventus.

In a recent column for The Sun, Alan Shearer feels that Lampard is the perfect appointment for Chelsea, as they look ahead to the new season.

"Frank Lampard is exactly who Chelsea need right now.

"I think he would be a very good appointment as manager and I understand why owner Roman Abramovich would want him.

Shearer feels as though the job will be too difficult for Lampard to turn down, and thinks it will be up there with his proudest moment in his career.

"And for him, I think the Chelsea job is almost impossible to turn down.

"If or when it happens, it will be the proudest day of his life. Yes, it is a risk, but you tell me a job that isn’t?

"Every manager I speak to says the same sort of things.

The ()-year-old admitted that it will be a no-brainer for the Derby boss to return to Stamford Bridge, and stated that the fans will be keen to see him succeed after such an impressive playing career with the Blues.

"Does he know the football club better than anyone else? Yes.

"Do the fans want him in there?  Absolutely, yes.

"They will welcome him with open arms and will be desperate for him to succeed because of who he is and what he achieved at the football club.

"So when you put all that together, it is a no-brainer for Frank."

The Verdict:

I have to disagree with him here.

I think Chelsea need stability heading into next season, and Lampard isn't the right person to take the job, especially with the Blues struggling for much of last year's campaign.

There are better options out there, and I fear that Lampard's glowing reputation at Stamford Bridge could be tarnished if he was to take charge of Chelsea.
