Sky Bet have installed Simon Grayson as the new 5/4 favourite to become the next permanent manager of Sunderland, after the Black Cats missed out on Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes yesterday.

Despite Sunderland and Aberdeen agreeing a compensation package for McInnes to move to the Stadium of Light, the 45-year old opted to turn down a move to the Sky Bet Championship and remain in Scotland with the Dons.

Preston North End’s boss, Grayson, has now been installed as the favourite with Sky Bet to become David Moyes’ permanent successor at Sunderland, after the Scot resigned as the club’s manager following their relegation from the Premier League.

Grayson’s reputation as a manager in the Championship is growing, after he helped Preston establish themselves in the second-tier, before leading the club to a top-half finish during the 2016/17 campaign.

The 47-year old has had spells with Blackpool, Leeds United and Huddersfield Town before joining Preston, and has achieved promotion with each of his four clubs, albeit from League One to the Championship.

Despite being installed as favourite, Grayson is not the clear candidate for the vacancy at the Stadium of Light, with Kevin Phillips, Nigel Pearson and Ally McCoist also featuring highly in the betting market.
