Gareth Ainsworth is in the frame for the managerial vacancy at Barnsley, with the Wycombe Wanderers boss emerging as a target for the Tykes.

According to Alan Nixon, Ainsworth is on Barnsley’s radar, as they look to source Jose Morais’ replacement at Oakwell.

Ainsworth, 45, led his Wycombe side to third in the Sky Bet League Two table last season, securing promotion to League One.

The 45-year-old collected 84 points during the 2017/18 campaign, as Wycombe edged a close battle to secure automatic promotion alongside Luton Town and Accrington Stanley.

Ainsworth is not the only name on Barnsley’s radar, with Grant McCann amongst others also under consideration at Oakwell.

McCann was a target for Barnsley back in February when Paul Heckingbottom departed for Leeds United, but the ex-Peterborough United boss didn’t land the role.

Morais oversaw the final three months of the Championship season, but was unable to prevent Barnsley dropping into League One and has since left his role at Oakwell.

Barnsley are now on the lookout for their third manager in six months, as they prepare or life back in the third-tier of English football.

The Verdict

Ainsworth has done a terrific job with Wycombe and helped to deliver promotion last season.

The 45-year-old being on Barnsley’s radar is hardly a surprise given his record over the last 12 months.

Whether he turns his back on his project with Wycombe, in favour of a move to Oakwell, remains to be seen.

Either way, Barnsley need to move to make a swift appointment.
