Queens Park Rangers will be relieved to see the back of the current season and may even be optimistic about what the future holds.

However, that all comes down to the club's board and whether they finally choose to make the right decision in a managerial sense.

This time last year, they made a frankly pitiful decision bringing in Steve McClaren - a man who has always been highly-rated as a coach but has always fallen flat as a manager.

And, unsurprisingly, it did not go well. After lingering towards the foot of the table all season, they started to creep into a free fall, winning just once in 14 matches, and McClaren was unsurprisingly given the boot.

The R's are still yet to appoint a replacement, which at least indicates that they could be carefully considering who they will bring in, with one of the latest names linked with the job being Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth, as reported by the Evening Standard.

More experienced second-tier names have been mentioned such as Michael Warburton and Carlos Carvalhal, but appointing Ainsworth could be a stroke of genius from the West London side.

The biggest problem at Loftus Road in recent years has been instability and the separation between all factions at the club.

The fans get on the players' backs and the players never seem to click with the manager or the hierarchy above him. Someone needs to come in and change that.

Ainsworth has worked wonders at Wycombe. Over his seven years as the Chair Boys' boss he has created a tightly-knit atmosphere that has been a huge factor in their rise back into League One.

Having played as a midfielder at Loftus Road between 2003 and 2010 as well as acting as their caretaker manager before, he will come in with the immediate respect of the fans, the board and crop of exciting young players they have at the club.

Of course, the appointment comes with its risks, but in their current state an Ainsworth figure is exactly what is needed and the R's should go all out to get him.
