45-year-old in the running for Blackburn Rovers vacancy following ‘intensified’ talks

Former Denmark international striker Jon Dahl Tomasson is in the running to become Blackburn Rovers‘ next manager, and a three-year contract has reportedly been discussed, according to Danish publication Ekstra Bladet.

The Championship outfit are still looking for Tony Mowbray’s replacement following his five-year stint at Ewood Park, with top contenders Carlos Carvalhal and Daniel Farke choosing to go elsewhere.

Other names have been linked to the post in recent days, including New York City head coach Ronny Deila and Bodø/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen, and now the latest individual to have his name circulated is Tomasson.

Blackburn's record transfer fee paid is over £10million?

The 45-year-old, whose playing career saw him feature for the likes of AC Milan, Newcastle United and Feyenoord, has managed three clubs post-retirement, the last one being Swedish giants Malmo from 2020 to 2021.

In his near two years in Sweden, Tomasson won the Allsvenskan league both times before departing at the end of December.

The Dane may have found his next role though, with Ekstra Bladet reporting that Tomasson is a live contender for the vacancy at Rovers, and that conversations between the two parties have ‘intensified’ in recent days.

The Verdict

Before arriving at Malmo, Tomasson’s coaching record was patchy at best, but he proved to get the best out of the Swedish oufit.

Naturally, a move to England – a country where he briefly played football – would be a step up for Tomasson’s managerial career as it would be one step to reaching the Premier League.

It doesn’t appear though that Blackburn know what they want yet, despite it being a month since Mowbray departed from Ewood Park.

All the managers that are said to be in the running right now are Scandinavian, which potentially shows the route Rovers may really be going down, but it would perhaps be unwise to say that Tomasson is now the favourite for the vacancy.
