Darren Currie is among the potential candidates to replace John Sheridan in charge of Wigan Athletic, according to TEAMtalk.

Sheridan - who took charge of Wigan in the summer - is on a month-to-month contract at the DW Stadium due to the club being in administration.

The 56-year-old is set to become the new manager of League One side Swindon Town, though, after Richie Wellens recently departed the County Ground to become the new manager of Salford.

Wigan will be on the lookout for a replacement for Sheridan, then, with Darren Currie believed to be amongst the candidates to potentially succeed the 56-year-old, as per TEAMtalk.

Currie is without a job after leaving Barnet at the end of last season, after failing to agree terms on a new contract at the Hive.

The 45-year-old guided the Bees to a National League play-off semi-final last season, where they lost 2-0 to Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Wigan - who sit two points adrift of safety at the bottom of League One - are said to be on the lookout for a progressive, young coach, with Currie reportedly of interest.

The Verdict

This would be a big step-up for Currie, but there is no reason why it cannot work out for him if he does get appointed.

He had Barnet playing some fantastic football last season, and they narrowly missed out on promotion after coming up against a good Notts County side.

He still has a lot of years ahead of him in management, and it would be an exciting appointment for the Latics.
