After a hugely disappointing start to the 2019/20 Sky Bet Championship campaign, Huddersfield Town remain on the lookout for a new manager following the sacking of Jan Siewert.

The German boss was relieved of his duties by the Terriers' board a fortnight ago, after winning just one out of 19 games during his tenure at the John Smith's Stadium.

The Terriers have endured a bitterly disappointing start to the campaign, losing four of their opening five league matches, as well as being knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the first time of asking by League One side Lincoln City.

There are still so many games left to play for Huddersfield, so their next managerial appointment needs to be the right one if they still want to achieve their goals of winning promotion back to the Premier League.

Mark Hudson has taken temporary charge of the Yorkshire club following Siewert's departure, but after two defeats on the spin, the 37-year-old hasn't really staked a claim to be given the job on a permanent basis.

Chairman Phil Hodgkinson, via the Examiner, has recently revealed that the club have received "quality" applications from both England and abroad, as the club look to make an appointment sooner rather than later.

The Yorkshire Post claim that former Hull City manager Nigel Adkins is a contender to replace Siewert, but the Examiner claim that Chris Hughton and Aitor Karanka will not be given the job as they have not yet applied.

Sky Sports claimed that Karanka was keen to speak to Huddersfield regarding the vacant role, with plenty of Terriers fans sounding out the Spaniard as the perfect replacement for Siewert.

The 45-year-old knows what it takes to win promotion to the Premier League, having done so with Middlesbrough in 2016, however his stance on the vacant job will come as a blow for all concerned with the club.

The Spanish boss has since managed Nottingham Forest, but has been out of work since the start of 2019 having seen his relationship with the Reds' hierarchy fall apart despite sitting within touching distance of the play-offs.

His style of play would have been a perfect fit for a Huddersfield side who have failed to dictate the tempo of the game over the last few weeks, with Karanka being known for his passing, possession-based brand of football.

Town need someone who can come in and pick up results straight away, and Karanka did just that when he arrived at the City Ground and replaced Mark Warburton. He took his side to high-flying Wolves, and beat them 2-0 at Molineux, outclassing them in midfield.

Fans will be disappointed at seeing a proven, experienced boss turn them down, as the club look to start afresh after a terrible beginning to the 19/20 campaign.
