Successive defeats in their last two games ended any faint hopes that Ipswich Town had of making a late push for the play-offs.

Given that, like any other club in the same situation, the focus is on next season but there is still a lot of uncertainty about who will be in charge of the Tractor Boys for that campaign.

Mick McCarthy has done a very good job in terms of results during his time at Portman Road, however a significant number of fans are unhappy with the style of play his side produce.

That has seen a real drop in attendances over the years whilst it has also created a negative atmosphere around the club.

Therefore, with McCarthy's contract set to expire, the Ipswich board are believed to be considering who could replace the Irishman and Steve McClaren was mentioned as a possible successor over the weekend.

One positive for appointing the former Derby boss is the wealth of experience that he has built up throughout his career, managing over 600 games.

As well as that, he has a good win record, although his spells at Pride Park won't make this a massively popular decision.

Yet, there's no doubt that he does try to encourage a more patient, passing style of play than McCarthy, which is a big factor to improving the atmosphere of the whole club.

Although, it's important to recognise that McCarthy has got a club with very limited resources comfortably away from the relegation zone and replacing him is a risk.
