Danny Cowley has openly admitted he would be interested in taking on the Sunderland job if the opportunity to takeover as manager presented itself.

The Black Cats are currently looking for a new boss after Phil Parkinson was relieved of his duties on Sunday evening.

The men from Wearside are desperate to get out of League One and that will be the task for the new manager, with new owners set to be backing him to help him do so.

Cowley admitted he'd be interested in the role, then, speaking on BT Sport's FA Cup coverage on Monday night.

Quoted by the Southend Echo, the 42-year-old boss said when asked whether he'd be interested in a move to the north-east:

“Sure. Sunderland are a huge football with a wonderful history. For whatever reason, they find themselves in League One but we will just have to wait and see.”

The Verdict

Cowley is a manager with a good reputation after the success and progress he brought to Lincoln City as he returned them to the Football League.

He and his brother Danny then moved to Huddersfield Town and helped keep them in the Championship last season but decided along with the ownership there it was then best to part ways as it seemed the two parties had different visions for the future.

He's been out of the job since, but is evidently open to an approach from Sunderland - though it remains to be seen if the Black Cats are going to make an offer.
