42-year-old far from convinced by what he’s seen from West Brom player this season

Danny Mills is unconvinced by what he has seen from West Brom striker Salomon Rondon while on loan at Newcastle United this season.

Rondon joined Newcastle on a season-long loan at the start of last season, as part of a swap deal with Dwight Gayle and scored eleven goals in 32 Premier League appearances for the Magpies last season.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is keen for Rondon to return to St James’ Park next season, but the striker has a £16.5million release clause in his contract.

Wolves are also reportedly interested in signing Rondon, who has now returned to West Brom, but Mills is far from convinced by what he has seen from the striker for Newcastle this season.

“I’m unconvinced. He’s done an okay job. I’m not convinced he is the most outstanding striker for that type of level,” Mills told Football Insider.

“Are there better strikers Newcastle can get across Europe within their budget? Probably, yes. They might have a ‘plan A’ striker target this summer and Rondon might be the ‘plan B’.

“You have to play a certain way to get the best out out of Rondon. He offers something, but I’m not sure he offers what you really need in the Premier League to play a technical-based game.”

West Brom finished fourth in the Championship table this season, despite sacking head coach Darren Moore in March, but lost to Aston Villa on penalties in the play-off semi-finals.

The Verdict:

Rondon could be an important player for West Brom in the Championship next season, if he does not leave the club in the summer.

I’m not sure if he’s worth £16.5million, but he is certainly a good player who is capable of scoring goals in the Premier League.

It will be interesting to see what happens regarding Rondon’s future at West Brom over the summer and I believe he would be a good signing for either Newcastle or Wolves.
