Queens Park Rangers assistant manager John Eustace has revealed that he turned down the Swansea City job in the summer because he is content with his current role with the R's.

Swansea were aiming to try and find the right long-term successor to Steve Cooper in the summer after he left his role with the Swans.

They identified Eustace as a potential managerial target and spoke to the QPR assistant manager about the prospect of taking the job.

However, in the end, Eustace decided to remain with QPR and Mark Warburton, with the R's aiming to mount a real promotion push this season after some solid summer transfer window business.

It has been a strong start for QPR and they are sat inside the Championship play-off places at the moment.

While Swansea are closer to the relegation zone having found wins hard to come by despite some good performances under new manager Russell Martin.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, via Wales Online, Eustace revealed that he is content with life as an assistant manager learning his trade under Warburton for the time being when asked about turning down the Swansea job in the summer.

The 41-year-old said: "I'm very happy here.

"There's a fantastic group here, great owners, I'm loving working with Mark and I'm learning a lot.

"Yeah, possibly in the future (of becoming a manager), but as say, it's all about my development.

"I'm loving working with Mark, I'm loving working for the club. I'm learning all the time so I'm in no rush for that."

The verdict

It was a very brave decision from Eustace to turn down the offer of a first post in management at Championship level with a side that had just reached the play-off final in the English second tier last term.

However, it seems like it might have been a smart decision from Eustace because the job that Martin has ahead of him at Swansea is a big one.

He is being tasked with rebuilding the brand of football that the Swans play with whilst also having to work on a tight budget in terms of player recruitment.

That would not have been an ideal position for an inexperienced manager such as Eustace to walk into and it is clear that he is developing well as a coach under Warburton.

Therefore, it makes sense that he has remained with the R's and he might well play a key role in helping the club get back into the Premier League.
