Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United side returned to the top of the Championship at the weekend, as they defeated Wigan Athletic 2-1 to move ahead of Norwich City on goal difference.

Goals from Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe proved to be enough for Bielsa's side in a game they were expected to win.

Wigan had taken the lead through Reece James, whose well struck free-kick beat Bailey Peacock-Farrell, but the promotion-chasing side responded with goals from the Spaniard and their top goalscorer to move to the top of the table.

Roofe's goal was his seventh of the season so far, and he certainly is cementing his position as Bielsa's first-choice striker at the club.

Former Leeds United left-back Ian Harte was full of praise for Roofe after the win over Wigan, and took to Twitter to call for the club to make movements towards persuading the former Oxford striker to sign a new deal with the club.

The 41-year-old's comments have been met with a mixed reaction, with some labelling his comments as unnecessary, stating that Roofe should be focusing on pushing Leeds up the table, like he has been for the majority of this season.

Bielsa will be hoping that his side can build on the win over Wigan when they aim for a positive result against West Brom this weekend, in what will be a fiercely contested game at the Hawthorns.

The Verdict

The reaction to Harte's comments came as a surprise to me.

Roofe is likely to be a man in demand after such a successful season so far, so Leeds will surely be considering a new deal for the striker to secure his long-term future.

However, you can see where Leeds supporters are coming from as they will want Roofe to be playing for a new deal with the club.

They won't want Roofe to sign a new deal with the club and then struggle in front of goal.
