It is all set to be a summer of change at Bramall Lane, with Sheffield United set to make a 6th attempt to get out of League One under the stewardship of new manager Chris Wilder.

Wilder is already making his mark in terms of how he will operate, with brutally honest interviews to the press, and ruthlessly releasing a plethora of players as he looks to embed his own style on the club.

Change though was what was needed at Bramall Lane after a season under Nigel Adkins saw them record their lowest league finish since the 80's, and divisions between supporters and the club becoming ever clearer.

Every Blades fan will have their opinion on how the club should be run, who the club should sign, and what style of football the team should be playing.

With this in mind, FLW writer Lee Connor gives his opinion on FOUR things that need to happen at Sheffield United this summer....

Clear out the dead wood

Manager Wilder has already made an excellent start in this respect with his releasing of 10 first team players, but it is now so important that the others he placed on the transfer list are also moved on.

Dean Hammond especially needs to be sold, with fans furious at the midfielder for taking a contract when not being wanted, while players like Kieron Freeman, Paul Coutts, and James Wallace are all a burden on the wage structure.

With Wilder set to add his own players, getting these high earners off the books opens the door for him to bring in some real quality of his own, and he will be hoping that clubs come knocking sooner, rather than later for his listed players.

Get value for money in the market

This is something which has killed the club in recent times, and owner Kevin McCabe has specifically pointed this out in his recent meeting with fans.

The Blades need to get value for their money. The size of the club in League One makes them an easy target for agents to bump up wage demands, but this does not always mean getting the best players, as last seasons captures of Connor Sammon and Dean Hammond demonstrated.

Many fans are crying out for the Blades to go and pinch the best talent in the same league and from League Two, believing it is the ideal way to get out of the division finally.

Time will tell, but Wilder will need to ensure he meets this target to satisfy the owners at the very least.

Sign some defenders

Jay McEveley

United were woeful at the back last season, and with Jay Mceveley, Bob Harris, and David Edgar all being moved on, it is vital the Blades find some quality at the back.

League One often requires height and brawn to make someone a good defender, and the Blades need to be looking for players in this mould.

It is all well and good looking for a ball playing defender, but for now United just need 2 or 3 players who simply know the art of basic defending. If Wilder can manage to bring in a few of these types of player, then it will go a long way to repairing the damage of last season.

Get the fans back on side

For too many years now the Blades fans have been slumped down in League One, while still following their team home and away in their droves. However, last season, things started to change, especially in fans attitudes.

Many fans were sick of paying to go and watch what was on display, seeing it as a waste of money and time while Nigel Adkins came up with excuse after excuse.

Wilder has made a good start in getting the fans back on side, but more will be needed in terms of signings, positive pre season results, and how the club interacts with fans.

Co-Chairman from last season Jim Phipps has now stepped aside, and although he took a lot of flack, he did make an effort with fans on social media platforms. More of this honesty and openness will be needed if the Blades want to see bums on more seats next season.
