This weekend saw a clash between two of the relegated sides, a former Premier League encounter taking place within the Championship.

Both West Brom and Stoke City harbour hopes of an immediate return and ahead of the season starting, the Potters perhaps had the pundits believing they might be the ones to watch. Six games in, that perception has changed and West Brom highlighted that with a fine 2-1 victory at the weekend.

The win leaves the Baggies ninth in the table, just four points off the top spot. The division is beginning to settle down now and take shape, with the Baggies ensuring they're in the mix going into the second month.

Much has been made of their squad, they hung on to Jay Rodriguez and Craig Dawson in the summer, added the talented Harvey Barnes too, but one man already standing out is Dwight Gayle.

FLW shines a spotlight on his match-winning performance this weekend:

The 27-year-old emerged from the non-league scene in 2011, but his current performances are top class. He's on three goals for the season now, two of which served to sink Stoke City at the Hawthorns.

He's a clinical striker, a cold and calculating finisher who can be utterly ruthless in front of goal. His goals came as a result of just two shots, a 100% strike rate for the former Crystal Palace man. He was on the pitch 72 minutes, but he won the game for his side.

He likes to not only get on the ball, but to travel with it too. He made four successful dribbles during the game, in addition to his other contributions. He also made a key pass, which all in all is a good additional impact.

His all round play was impressive, he made 11 passes, 73% of which were successful. Whilst that would be disappointing for a midfielder, a striker such as Gayle is there to get the ball and usually put it in the back of the net.

To see him having a decent game in addition to the two goals must be very heartening for Baggies fans and, given his strikes, they must see a bright future ahead of them. Their other players are talented and will always create, and on Saturday's evidence, when they do, Gayle will score.
