Coventry City have turned things around since their dismal early season form which saw manager Tony Mowbray depart with the club sitting rock bottom of League One without a win.

Goals were a big problem with Coventry's early season form and while they have picked up a bit now, that is mainly due to a number of contributors rather than having a prolific striker.

Adam Armstrong was the main main for Coventry last season and the England youth international hit 20 goals in 40 league games while on loan from Newcastle.

The Sky Blues have failed to find a replacement; Andre Wright looks out of his depth, Dan Agyei looks promising but raw, Jack McBean has not been first team ready, Kwame Thomas looks poor and he is also injured and Marvin Sordell is looking better by the game but is mainly being used as a winger.

Coventry need to sign a top class striker in January and here are FOUR suggestions that they should consider.

Jay Simpson

Jay Simpson needs to be handed a route out of Leyton Orient because that is a sad case of a sinking ship, ruined by the owners.

Simpson finished second behind Matty Taylor in the League Two goalscoring charts last season and he is bound to be able to replicate the goods in League One with the right service.

The speedy 27-year-old is a proven goalscorer and he is being misused at Orient.

Toni Martinez

West Ham youngster Toni Martinez stunned Coventry when he netted two fantastic goals against them at the Ricoh Arena in the EFL Trophy earlier this season.

The former Valencia youngster was renowned as a prolific goalscorer in Spain and he has already been producing the goods in West Ham's under-23 side, with seven goals in seven appearances for the young Hammers.

The 19-year-old already knows where the Ricoh Arena net is and needs a lower league loan spell to get familiar with competitive football in England.

Dominic Samuel

Former Coventry loanee Dominic Samuel is on the fringes at Reading and might well be offloaded in January.

The 22-year-old has only featured in two Championship games this season and doesn't appear to be in Jaap Stam's plans.

The best spell of Samuel's career was at Coventry, where he scored 6 goals in 12 starts and the Sky Blues would welcome him back to lead the line with open arms.

Leon Clarke

Crawley manager John Gregory denies interest in Leon Clarke

Leon Clarke returning to Coventry would be a potentially divisive move with a large number of fans still not forgiving him for leaving in his previous spell.

But the reality is that the 31-year-old scores goals and plenty of them; that's proven!

Clarke scored a remarkable 23 in 34 for the Sky Blues a few years ago and is now a peripheral player at League One rivals Sheffield United.
