Portsmouth currently sit fourth place in Sky Bet League Two, after a run of results that have seen them lose only three times all season, the joint best in the league.

They are the highest scorers in the division with 44 goals, and only leaders and rivals Plymouth Argyle have a better defensive record.

However, they have won 11 games compared to Plymouth's 16; they are simply drawing too often. In fact, only Oldham have been held to a tie more in the top four divisions of English football.

Pompey are on the back of an impressive 2-2 draw at Championship side Ipswich. With a replay to come, they could find themselves in a derby day fourth round tie against newly promoted Premier League side Bournemouth.

However, for Portsmouth to push on to the top three, they will require January reinforcements.

Reece Oxford

Reece Oxford

Reece Oxford actually made a name for himself in West Ham's opening Premier League match against Arsenal, where many credit him for marking Mesut Ozil out of the game.

The 17-year old can play both at centre back and in centre midfield, and has made four Premier League appearances this season.

The London-born player has already been called up to the England Under 19 squad, whilst he was only 16.

He is the second youngest player to make a Premier League appearance of all time. Oxford also has European experience, making three starts in West Ham's Europa League qualifiers earlier this season.

It is no doubt that we are looking at a star of the future in Reece Oxford. A loan to League 2, and in particular Portsmouth, would be beneficial for him as it would allow him to learn from one of the most successful defences in the country this season, and would add extra strength and depth to the Portsmouth side.

Jack Stephens

Jack Stephens

Jack Stephens is a Cornwall born centre-back currently playing for Southampton. Like a lot of Cornwall's current professionals, he came through the Plymouth Argyle youth academy, making five appearances for the Devon side in the 2010-11 season.

He is currently on loan at Championship leaders Middlesbrough, where he has made four appearances.

He has made one start for England's Under 21 side after being called up from the Under 20's.

Stephens is a versatile player who can play in all defensive positions as well as defensive midfield.

The Cornishman shows a lot of potential, as was evident in recent loan spells at Swindon Town. If Stephens was to go to Portsmouth, he would add extra cover to the centre of their defence.

Sadiq El Fatouri

El Fatouri is currently a key squad member in the Manchester United under-21 squad. A full back with pace and power, he could prove to be a shrewd gamble by Nigel Adkins if he made the move.

El Fatouri is known for playing for Gary and Phil Neville's Salford City, when Phil made a call to the Man United coaching hierarchy as he had a hunch El Fatouri could well play for Man United.

Neville was right, and El Fatouri was offered a contract. He may benefit from some first team football action in the lower leagues to continue his development, with Bramall Lane an ideal destination.

Oliver Shenton

Oliver Shenton9

18-year old Shenton is currently registered at Stoke City, where he made his debut in the League Cup last season against Portsmouth.

His league debut came in a game against Manchester City, in which he earned praise from Frank Lampard.

The striker signed a four year extension to his contract this month, and with Stoke doing well in the Premier League, it may be hard for him to muscle his way through regularly.

Mark Hughes admitted that this season he would have to give Shenton more regular first team opportunity, although this hasn't panned out.

A loan spell would give Shenton the opportunity to prove to us all just how good he is, and with Lampard and Hughes' references on board, Paul Cook may well seriously consider a bid for the young man.
