Sheffield Wednesday’s 2017/18 campaign has been a disappointment, there is no getting away from that, as the Owls drift towards a mid-table finish under Jos Luhukay.

It has been a season where injuries have hit the Owls, with Luhukay not having a fully fit squad yet during his time at Hillsborough.

The likes of Fernando Forestieri and Tom Lees have missed large chunks of the season, but so to have Barry Bannan, Kieran Lee and Sam Hutchinson, who all play a key role in central midfield.

Wednesday have still had bodies in that area of the field, with David Jones one man to step in for the injured trio.

Jones has disappointed on the whole, failing to bring what his teammates can to the central midfield role.

The return of the likes of Bannan and Hutchinson coincided with an upturn in results, and it is likely that Jones’ role would be a lot more limited had others been available.

With that in mind, here is a look at FOUR players we believe would be an upgrade on the 33-year-old…

If more experience is what Luhukay wants, he could do far worse than trying to tempt Leadbitter out of the Riverside Stadium.

The Middlesbrough midfielder has been terrific this season, helping the Teessiders into play-off contention.

Bridcutt is a younger option, who would do a terrific job in defensive midfield.

His time with Nottingham Forest hasn’t really gone as planned and a move to Hillsborough could help him get back on track.

Vela continues to impress for Bolton Wanderers in the Championship, despite Phil Parkinson’s side struggling.

A slightly more attacking option, but with others to fill the holding role, a move could make sense.

Kieftenbeld has been impressive for Birmingham City, and although Garry Monk might see him featuring in his plans, a move wouldn’t be impossible.

Birmingham have tried a similar system to Wednesday’s on occasion this season, and although it hasn’t had an impact on results, Kieftenbeld has looked good and could slot into Luhukay’s 3-5-2.
