The 2017/18 campaign has been a difficult one for Reading in the Sky Bet Championship, with the Royals failing to build on last season’s success.

Jaap Stam has departed the Madejski Stadium with Reading facing a relegation battle, with Paul Clement now the man in-charge of the Royals.

Reading are still threatened by relegation in the Championship, but should have enough to survive the drop in the coming weeks.

Should Reading survive, which is expected, Clement’s attention will turn to a huge summer, where he will be tasked with patching up a broken squad, who have fallen from promotion contenders to relegation candidates in 12 months.

The summer transfer window is going to be a big one for Clement, who will want to add some real quality at the Madejski Stadium.

One player who we believe he will be looking for an upgrade on is Dave Edwards, who has struggled to have a positive impact in blue and white following his summer arrival.

Here is a look at FOUR midfielders we believe would be an upgrade…

Klich endured a disappointing first year in English football with Leeds United, but there were signs that the Polish midfielder could be well suited to the English game.

In a side that likes to play football like Reading, Klich could impress in a central midfield role when he returns from a loan spell back in Holland.

Lee’s 2017/18 campaign has been difficult due to injury, with Sheffield Wednesday really missing the midfielder.

If Clement can lure Lee away from Hillsborough it would be a big plus for Reading, who would benefit from the midfielder’s experience and quality on the ball.

King is currently with Swansea City on-loan in the Premier League, with the midfielder on the fringe of Leicester City’s squad in the Premier League.

The midfielder could well leave the King Power Stadium permanently in the summer, which could put a number of Championship clubs on alert.

For us, King would be an upgrade on Edwards at Reading.

Edwards scores goals from central midfield, and should he leave, Clement will want to make sure a replacement has goalscoring instincts.

Powell fits that category, with the midfielder extremely impressive for Wigan Athletic in League One this season.

The 24-year-old can play deep or in a more advanced position and would be a player Clement could get the best out of.
