Charlton Athletic owner Thomas Sandgaard will be searching for a new manager for his club after dispensing of Nigel Adkins earlier today.

The final straw for the ex-Southampton man came following a 3-2 home defeat against Accrington Stanley, with the Addicks only picking up two wins in 13 League One games this season.

Johnnie Jackson will take caretaker charge for the foreseeable future with no rush to appoint Adkins' successor, and it could turn out to be Jackson who takes over if he does well enough.

If not Jackson though, let's look at four other potential candidates that Sandgaard should be looking at as the new person in The Valley dugout.

Michael Flynn

Flynn has not long been unemployed having departed Newport County just a few weeks ago after a four-year tenure as their manager.

He masterminded some big cup runs for the Welsh side but after lots of trying he could not get the Exiles into League One despite multiple play-off campaigns.

Nevertheless though Flynn's side have played good football over the years and as a man who holds a UEFA Pro License as well - one of the top accolades in the game - many believe he deserves a step up the leagues and Charlton may be a good fit.

Harris wouldn't be a mind-blowing Charlton appointment, nor does his name jump off the paper, but he has a decent record at the level above League One.

Things ended poorly at Cardiff earlier this year for the Millwall icon but in the first six months of his time in Wales he turned the Bluebirds from a mid-table team to a play-off one and he arguably overachieved as Lions manager.

Harris could potentially be in the mould of another Adkins but he has been somewhat successful at a level higher and now may have his sights on League One and Charlton would be a job that is close to home and he would take nothing less than 110 per cent effort from his players.

Alex Neil

This may be an ambitious one with Neil you'd imagine having desires of still managing in the Championship following stints with Norwich City and Preston North End.

The Scot may have to lower his sights though but there's not many more ambitious League One clubs than Charlton who have spent a decent amount of money this season.

Neil would have the resources to get things done but would he take a step down? You can only try if you are Sandgaard but another issue could be that he is settled in the north of England and Charlton is a long, long way away from his current residence.

Claus Jensen

Wouldn't it be good if Jensen made a heroic return to The Valley after 17 years away?

Now 44 years old, the Dane left Charlton in 2004 after a four-year stint as a player and he took his first steps into management last year with Nykobing in his native country.

Jensen won promotion in his first full season as manager with his side now sitting in mid-table in Denmark's second tier.

Sandgaard is Danish, Jensen is Danish and also a fan favourite at the club - it would just make sense wouldn't it?
